Health and safety chiefs have been landed in hot water by banning hot drinks... from coffee mornings.
For seven years parents have drunk tea and coffee and dunked biscuits as their kids played at Mill Hill Children's Centre, Waterlooville, Hampshire.
But now the mothers and fathers will have to catch up over glasses of water after the centre decided hot drinks posed too much of a threat to toddlers.
Karen Griffin, 29, from Portsmouth, is one of 20 parents who attend the coffee mornings, with her seven-month-old son Jacob.
The 29-year-old said: 'I think it's absurd. A lot of us mums enjoy a gossip over a cup of coffee. It just won't be the same.
'We have to pay £1 pound a time to go. If we are not getting tea and coffee I don't think we should have to pay for it.'
Caroline Poole, 27, from nearby Gosport brings son Matthew, one, along every week.
She said: 'I don't see what the big deal is. They are going way over the top.
'Everyone drinks coffee at home or in the car. What's the difference?'
Centre co-ordinator Penny Bovey justified the ban and said: 'We feel this is a sensible way of keeping children safe.
'Groups are only run for approximately one and a half hours and cold drinks are available.
'Groups where children are not mobile or in a creche will still be able to have hot drinks.'

Think of the children!!
Think of the children!!

Going?
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Think of the children!!
Yeah Going. The place got a new lease on sanity once he left.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Re: Think of the children!!
A woman with whom I used to work who is a very dark skinned black woman made herself a cup of hot chocolate and set it aside on the kitchen counter. Her bright, beautiful, very dark skinned toddler somehow managed to pull that cup off the counter while mom's back was turned and burned herself badly. It took her skin off her face and arm in a second. The child had a bright pink face and spots on her arm that were bright pink, which contrasted noticeably with her other much darker skin for ages. Thank God it missed her eyes. Mom had to go through hell with child protective services until they decided it was truly an accident. Her little girl will bear discolored skin for life because of the incident. Mom btw is a highly educated woman who is generally the best of parents. It was an accident but one with lasting consequences.
It might not be a bad idea to not mix the hot beverages with the little kids.

The next step is what...wrapping them in Nomex-lined bubble wrap?
Treat Gaza like Carthage.

Re: Think of the children!!
Well you know me, I would trip kids and have them fall in vats of lava. I was just offering an opposing view for shits and giggles.
Re: Think of the children!!
Well all I can say is it must be a miracle so many of us managed to grow up without all the safety equiptment and very protective parents. I quess kids today are just more accident prone and klutzy than we were requiring more stringent intervention for their safety.

Helicopter parents, don't you just hate them?
So far this year Hatch has gone camping, surfing, caving, rock-climbing, canyoning, abseiling with the school, plus sailing on the open seas, canoeing, and kayaking with the scouts, and rock climbing and bushwalking with me. (She got a A++ for her "outdoor education" class final result in school)
We know of at least 3 of her friends who do not do any of these activities due to parental "safety concerns"

And we drank water from the garden hose (not water bottles) and fell off swings on to concrete (not rubberized playgrounds) and even played dodgeball.Miles wrote:Well all I can say is it must be a miracle so many of us managed to grow up without all the safety equiptment and very protective parents. The factory chimney in the middle was from an iron smelting plant. I did my apprenticeship there.
The chimneys on the left are from the UK's largest copper smelting plant.
Both factories (now gone thank fuck) emptied their raw effluent into that dock (Fed by the river Lledi)
It's a wonder I don't have two heads and glow in the dark.
