For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

It's amazing how far people will pervert something to serve their own purposes.

That's the original quote. See how it makes so much more sense this way?“Girls are like apples ... the best ones are at the top of the trees. The boys don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they just get the rotten apples that are on the ground that aren't as good, but easy. So the apples at the top think there is something wrong with them, when, in reality, they are amazing. They just have to wait for the right boy to come along, the one who's brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.” .....Pete Wentz

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: This was written for gay men, but it can apply to anyone
It certainly makes as much sense. I don't see how it makes more sense. It resonated with me instantly because I recognize so many gay guys I know in that description - both the really great guys who are left languishing at the top of the tree, and the guys who are too intimidated to go after them and so go foraging among the rotten ones fallen to the ground. What about that would make you think that it was a uniquely heterosexual experience?
But I guess that's just my perverted gay point of view.
We missed having Dave around to refer to gays as perverts. Good to know that someone has joined to fill that void.

Reading comprehension isn't your long suit, is it?Scooter wrote:We missed having Dave around to refer to gays as perverts. Good to know that someone has joined to fill that void.
Nowhere did I say that gay guys (or girls) are necessarily perverts, and you know that damned good and well. I said that someone 'perverted' a quotation — using the word to mean "having been corrupted or distorted from its original course, meaning, or state" (definition from the Online OED).
If someone wants to snuggle up or have buttsex with someone whose plumbing is the same as theirs I'm fine with that, so long as they don't expect me to be the person they are going to bugger or snuggle up with. Other than that, my feelings on the matter are more in keeping with the famous observation of one Mrs. Patrick Campbell — "My dear, I don't care what they do, so long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses."

I got exactly what you meant. The fact that you don't recognize it in what you wrote doesn't change that.

Then what was the point in making your original comment? Because it's not a perversion of the original, it's a variation tailored to address same sex relationships. The concept of waiting for someone who deserves you is universal to all, whether you date the same sex or opposite sex.
I detected some disgust in the tone of your response, so it wasn't just Scooter being overly sensitive.

I agree that they are equal uses of the metaphor. I wasn't going to say so before because the passage is charming and it is a mere detail, but the underlying assertion is false. I have picked apples for a living and the ones at the top are no better than those lower down. The ones on the ground otoh, are discarded.

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

This sounds like "entitlement".The concept of waiting for someone who deserves you is universal to all

That's your filter.
I think it is perfectly acceptable to have high standards and want a partner in life who appreciates you as a wonderful creature, especially if you are the sort of person who treats her partner the same.
There are lots of women - men too, I'm sure - who settled for getting shit on and taken for granted. I don't think expecting a lot more is 'entitlement'.

My filter was that if I was looking for a life partner it would be a POTOS (person of the opposite sex), so I wouldn't be climbing in that tree no matter how great the apples at the top of it were.

Learn from the wisdom of the Labrador my friend. They do not merely seek treats, they find them, they know who is the seeker, and what is to be found.
