My mother grew up in a fatherless household. Her father died at home in 1934 b/c they didn't have money for doctors, he died of a burst appendix.

My grandmother had to raise 3 kids w/o a husband during the great depression.

The greatest generation!

Oh yeah, she was a great mother and had to put up with a lot of sh!t from us two kids and the old man.

She never complained.

She died the day after my b'day 2006.

Mother's Day, according to Wikipedia, was pushed to nation recognition by Anna Jarvis, who later fought against Hallmark and other commercial exploiters. I really like Ann Lamott as an essayist, but I think her fiction is a bit weak.

You know, I have to say that after about 20 years now of participating on three boards, (the Cafe Darte, the CSB, and now Plan B) it's rare that I see something that genuinely surprises me... (well, except of course for posts from rube, which provide a never ending source of amazement...)

But I have been truly surprised by some of the reactions I have seen in this thread...

I started what I thought would a completely non-controversial, "feel good" "Happy Mothers Day" thread...

Just as one might start a thread saying, "Happy Thanksgiving" or "Happy 4th Of July" ...

I had no idea of the depth of negativity some folks around here have towards Mothers Day...

That took me completely by surprise...

I am not surprised at all. I find it an expression of the ornery streak in many Americans--don't tell ME when to be nice to my mother.

Also, this board is by no means 'typical' of Americans in general. But just because I love a good argument, don't take it that I agree with Wylie. He wrote it way back in 1942 and things have changed. Many of the changes have improved some of the things 'Generation of Vipers' attacked.

Why does it surprise you to learn that not all mothers are wonderful and thus much loved by their kids?

I used to wonder why no one came around to see certain patients that I cared for in long-term care. Eventually I would find out the reasons and had to agree with the kids: This person does not deserve any particular reverence from those to whom she gave birth.

My husband's step-daughter is a classic example of someone whose grown kids are probably never going to have anything to do with her. In particular is that she stays with her (verbally only as far as we know) abusive husband. Now my husband, a very big man, is extremely laid back and easy going. He was at their house and heard father say to oldest son something that I don't recall exactly but involved calling the oldest son something like a fucking little pussy and said, "come out here and suck my dick". My husband grabbed the man by the back of the neck and slammed him against the wall and told him that if he ever spoke to the boy that way again he would crush his head. The step-daughter will not leave the man because he brings home a good check and she is too fat and lazy to get out and earn her keep. The kids are fat and ruined and there is not enough therapy in the world to fix them. I won't go near any of them in the first place because I could never keep my mouth closed and would lay her out verbally. The kids will hate her for this one day. Oh and husband is not allowed in their house any more. Such a surprise.

So you see Jim, not everyone gets that mamma love that you got. For many, mother's day is a day of pain.

I've heard an awful lot about apple pie with cheese ("apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze").  Where and when did this ever get started?  I'm from Wisconsin ("America's Dairyland"), where we will pour melted cheese over almost anything that will hold still long enough; we will even dunk cheese nuggets into a beer-batter and deep-fry them (beer, cheese, and grease — three of the four major Wisconsin food groups!)

No. He was married previously to a woman who had 4 kids that he raised. He did not adopt them but they all regard him as "Dad".
