It's questions like these that A) make Russians look really conceited B) let various pricks say everything that's ever bothered them about Russia. The net result is always negative, my friend, always.

Yes, Russia is such a great country! I agree with all the statements that you mentioned above. Some of the best classical music master pieces are Russian.

Maybe it has to do with all the harsh, depressive stages on the life of the country? poverty among citizens? or just cultural understanding of riches? Their education is superb, I have never met a stupid Russian person. They're remarkable!

yes!!!!!
World war I
Military Deaths 1,811,000
Civilian Deaths 1,500,000
Military wounded 4,950,000.

After all those deaths they pulled out before the war was over

World War II
Military Deaths 10,700,000
Civilian Deaths 11,400,000
13.71% of the population dead

i agree Russia had great scientist and writers but sports teams? what has Russia done in the world cup or the Euro cup?

The last time they even made it into the finals was in 1988 under the Soviet union and have only made it to round 1 under Russia.

russia is the biggest country in world (land) but lives in poverty,
russia defenately has not the best athlets in world, has some good but not the best
is rich in oil bla bla bla,but still lives in poverty, that means is not able to develop this rich
as long as i am from greece, which greece population is 15 times less, and the area land much more smaller, although has so many things to show i am kind of strict about placing russia so great
there are many more great countries in the world (i wont say greece ) but defenately is not that great as you say

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah, right.

Patton's Third Army would have been in Berlin well before the Soviet Army had it been allowed. The decision was made to allow the Soviets into Berlin first during a "Big Three" meeting at Yalta, and the US and British armies had to stop in their tracks.

Russia didn't fight in Italy, North Africa, or the Pacific, so they COULD concentrate their forces in eastern Europe, with help from the tons and tons of supplies provided by the US and Britain. The US fought the war on FOUR fronts, and kicked butt on each of them.

Athletes? Take away Ukrainians, Belorussians, Georgians, Moldovians, Uzbecks, Turkmenis, and any other non-Russian that represented the old USSR, and how many medals do you have?

As far as the rest of the list, you're not unique.

You want to brag, make sure you CAN brag.

No the bashing is USA and this country deserves it. When I was young I devoted my life to the defense of the United States; while others were screaming, “hell no I want go” I was prepared to die for freedom. I was a cold warrior and I find nothing shameful about that. We had men killed during the cold war in Korea, Vietnam and even some in Afghanistan. But now so called Americans will not fights for the country. It appears that a country can only get so fat and comfortable before it falls. If Putin understood just how morally weak this country is he would make his move now while Obama is still president, not Hilary would be any better.

You know, Lib, it's OK (I guess) if you want to post unattributed screeds written by someone else here ... but could you at least take the time to clean up all the extra crap (like the text that, in the original, linked to some bullshit ad or the comments left by people on the original website) that comes over with it?

Or at the very least provide a link to the site hosting the original garbage you are trying to cut-and-paste, so that when it says something like this —
Russia has a very powerfull military capable of defending against any agressor or agressors in the world,Russia is... show more
— we can at least see what the "more" is?  Basically, all you've done here is posted a fragment of something, wasted bandwidth, and annoyed countless thousands of electrons needlessly.
(and BTW, tell your source that 'agressor' [sic] is spelled with two 'g's and he didn't need so many 'l's in 'powerfull' [sic])

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Some people miss the cold war fantasies and delusions more than others.

Their self-deceptions had internal consistency, back then.

As has been noted by others lib, your OP is somewhat convoluted and difficult to follow thematically...(he said diplomatically 8-) )

However I must strongly take issue with your central thesis. I don't see anything "great" about the thug run, expansionist, authoritarian kleptocracy that Russia has become under the murderer Vladimir Putin. Nor do I see anything even the slightest bit enviable about it.

On top of all of that, the Russian economy is contracting, (and has been for several years) a fact which is not generally associated with a vibrant nation with a strong strategy for the future:
Russian Economy Seen Contracting Further Amid Low Oil Prices

Bank of Russia cuts its gross domestic product forecast to a decline of 1.7% to 2.5%

MOSCOW—Russia’s oil-dependent economy is set to contract more than previously expected in the first quarter as oil prices are likely to remain at low levels, the Bank of Russia said Wednesday.

The Bank of Russia said it now sees gross domestic product declining 1.7% to 2.5% on the year in the first quarter compared with previous forecast of a 1% to 2% contraction. The economy may return to growth no earlier than in the second half of 2016, the central bank said.

“The observed worsening of external economic conditions at the start of this year increases risks of weaker economic activity,” the central bank said in its first ever regular report on the economy.

The central bank’s acknowledgment is another example of reassessment of the existing economic hurdles. Amid falling prices and Western sanctions, the Russian economy may contract further despite President Vladimir Putin’s assurance that the worst of the crisis is over.

“Comments from the authorities are usually better than reality,” said Dmitry Polevoy, chief economist at ING in Moscow. “Claims that the crisis was bottoming out began in the middle of last year, and the market perceived them with some skepticism.”

In 2015, Russia’s GDP fell 3.7% as oil prices dropped and Western sanctions hit the economy. Analysts predict that Russia will remain in recession this year.

The bottom line is that unless and until Russia returns to the path it embarked on in the 90's after the collapse of the Soviet Union; a pro-democratic, law-based path of development that guarantees basic rights and freedoms, and does not threaten its neighbors...

it will remain what it has become under the Putin dictatorship; an odious, economically weak semi-rogue state that the US and the other Western Democracies must seek to thwart and contain at every turn.

ETA:
Some people miss the cold war fantasies and delusions more than others.
Ahh, you must be referring to the fantasies and delusions of some (but by no means all) Liberals who during the Cold War delusionally fantasized that the Soviet Union represented no threat to the US or the rest of the West...

Yes, good riddance to those fantasies and delusions I say...

Mrs Mc has been to Russia twice in the last six years, visiting a city of about 250,000 and a smaller one of about 40,000 population. She has found the country to be in far better shape than we were always lead to believe by American propaganda. The people are very glad to interact with Americans. Politics was not discussed. Most people seem to be quite happy. Only one of the people she has met had any kind of wealth. His home was probably on par with any three bedroom split level you'd find here. Practicing English seems to be the national pass time.

Politics was not discussed.
That's certainly understandable...I expect the average Russian wouldn't be very comfortable discussing politics now...Unless they're in the mood to sing the praises of Vladimir Putin...

MG, I'm not sure what you mean by "American propaganda"...

The figures on the contracting Russian economy come from The Bank of Russia...

The Russian invasion of two sovereign states (Georgia and Ukraine) isn't "American propaganda"...

The annexation of Crimea, in violation of treaties the Russians signed isn't "American propaganda"...

All the imprisonments, disappearances and deaths of Putin opponents aren't "American propaganda"...

The shut downs of opposition press aren't "American propaganda"...

The elimination of an independent judiciary under Putin isn't "American propaganda"...

All of these negative things (and many others) have actually, verifiably happened....

A good example of propaganda would be the claim that the Ukrainian government is controlled by Nazis...
