A Hundred and Four Years Ago Today

Post by Bicycle Bill »

On the night of April 14, 2012, RMS TITANIC struck an iceberg while on her maiden voyage to America, and went down in the North Atlantic.  Some interesting facts —
  • ● — TITANIC had two sister ships, RMS OLYMPIC and HMHS BRITANNIC, and was actually the second ship built of the three.
    ● — it cost around $7 million to build TITANIC in 1912 dollars (which works out to around $170 million, adjusted for inflation, today).  By comparison, the 1997 movie "TITANIC" had a budget of $200 million (which works out to around $300 million, adjusted for inflation, today)
    ● — the number of lifeboats, even though woefully inadequate, was still more than it was legally required to carry
    ● — the TITANIC tragedy marked the first known time the radio signal "SOS" was sent as a distress call
    ● — surviving crew members did not receive their full pay for the voyage; wage calculations stopped at the time of sinking
    ● — even today some people believe that it was not TITANIC that sank that night and that the ship that went down was actually her sister ship RMS OLYMPIC, which had been damaged as a result of a collision in 1911 with a Royal Navy vessel.  Theories have been put forth that White Star Lines switched the names of the ships and intended to sink the damaged-and-repaired OLYMPIC (but bearing the name TITANIC) in a pre-arranged accident — supposedly rescue ships were going to be close enough to prevent the loss of lives — and collect the insurance on the newer ship.  This has, of course, been debunked repeatedly, but you know how it is with conspiracy theorists.
    ● — the unwritten "law of the sea" (women and children first) was observed as much as possible; 75% of all women passengers survived the tragedy.  Most of the women who were lost were 3rd-class passengers who were not allowed to get to the lifeboats in time.
    Now, however ....

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

[Meade mode] Did you mean four years and one month ago? Or 104 years and one month ago? And you left out the one month. I'm so confused...[/Meade mode]

How do we know it wasn't May 14, 1912? Where's the video... and where are the people who supposedly witnessed it? Maybe it's really June 14, 1913... who knows for sure? Let's face it -- history is created by the best writers.

And they SAY it sank after hitting an iceberg.  But if that's the case, how come when they discovered the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean there were no pieces of the iceberg found among the debris???

In other news, investigators found that even though it's been over a hundred years since the accident, the ship's swimming pool is still filled.....
