David Cameron has said he will stand down as prime minister before the Conservative Party Conference in October after the British public backed Brexit in the EU referendum.
Speaking outside Downing Street this morning, he said it was not right for him "to be the captain of the ship" after voters chose a different path to the one he promoted.
So who might take his place in the coming months?
Former London mayor Boris Johnson has been sitting comfortably ahead of his rivals, according to the bookmakers and the polls – although it is worth noting that they had also largely favoured a Remain result.
Home Secretary Theresa May is still in second place in terms of odds, while Remain campaigner Chancellor George Osborne has dropped from third place earlier this year down to sixth place. He has taken a bruising by the overnight result.
Justice Secretary and leading Brexit campaigner Michael Gove has replaced Osborne in the third spot.
Andrea Leadsom, who earned thunderous applause when she savaged the "undemocratic EU" at this week's debate in Wembley, has risen to the fourth spot, followed by another Brexit campaigner Priti Patel.
In looking at these six:
It seems to me you can toss May and Osbourne out of the competition right off the bat. These two are both Remain supporters, and if you were going to pick either of them you might as well just keep Cameron. It makes zero sense to replace him with another member of the "Leave would mean another Great Depression and WW III" team...
Personally I like Boris Johnson, and I think he'd make a fine Prime Minister, but from what I've been reading he doesn't have a lot of friends among the Tory MPs, so his path to the Prime Ministership might not be the cakewalk that many in the press seem to be projecting...
I know nothing about Michael Gove, except that in trying to learn something about him I discovered that he is so dorky looking he makes Kevin Rudd look like a real macho man:

Not sure how effective he would be in leading the party in the next general election...
Priti Patel, who is the Employment Minister, would certainly be a bold choice. I didn't know anything about her either, but from some reading I've done she would be possibly the most right-wing choice of the contenders mentioned...
That leaves the Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom, who I mentioned in another thread, I was very favorably impressed with when I saw her during the vote coverage yesterday...
I think that if Boris isn't able to marshal the votes, she would make an excellent choice...
In addition to the positive qualities she has that I mentioned in the other thread, in doing some research on her I've discovered that she is frequently compared to Margaret Thatcher...
And there can be no higher praise then that...
