From RBG (concurring):

“Targeted regulation of abortion providers laws…that ‘do little or nothing for health but rather strew impediments to abortion’ cannot survive judicial inspection.”

Ha. I had read the decision (plus the other opinions) and was quoting her by 1130 this morning.

I think it's notable that this was one of the driest opinions written by the majority upholding abortion rights (in this case by Breyer). And that is a very good thing.

As opposed to the apoplectic hysterics of the dissents (as usual).

The truly embarrassing fact is that three justices did not see that childbirth was 10 x as likely to kill the mother as abortion. And there were no symmetrical conditions on facilities which birthed children.

Conservatives with a connection to reality should be ashamed. If the category is not completely mutually exclusive.

Exactly. Thomas states directly that he “remain fundamentally opposed to the Court’s abortion jurisprudence."

If that is the case, he should be recusing himself from all such decisions.

I have seen and heard lots of discussion about this announcement today. But the Supremes did lots of stuff today, including upholding the exclusion of the federal right to purchase a firearm because of involvement in domestic violence. That one had little attention.

Personally, I think that lack of attention is related to the trivialization of domestic violence, unless there is video from the elevator.

I think it will get more coverage when talk turns to the reasonable gun regulation movement again, but today we had this historic and strong opinion for women's healthcare rights that is going to roll back regressive abortion laws in numerous states, plus the possibility of a two woman ticket hinted at by the spectacular campaign appearance of Hillary & Elizabeth, so there was a lot for women to just celebrate today!

Mostly I think because the issue wasn't terribly controversial and the Court decided Voisine by a 6-2 majority. Notably, the dissenters were the odd couple of Clarence Thomas and Sonja Sotomayor. I haven't read the opinion yet but it's next up.

And in further news from Texas:
WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas, June 27 (UPI) -- A Texas city council voted to evict the local library's resident cat after six years in a move the mayor described as retribution for a dog-loving city worker. The White Settlement City Council voted 2-1 at a June 14 meeting to give the White Settlement Public Library 30 days to find a new home for Browser, the feline that has resided at the facility for about six years.

Councilmen Elzie Clements and Paul Moore voted to evict Browser. "City Hall and city businesses are no place for animals," Clements said at the meeting.

The majority of residents addressing the council during the meeting spoke in support of Browser. "This is not just a cat, it's like a family pet," former Councilman Alan Price said. He said supporters "will petition for an election if we need to -- we'll take this to November. I don't think that will be any problem."

Mayor Ron White, whose office makes him a a nonvoting council moderator, described Browser's eviction as petty retaliation for a city employee not being allowed to keep a puppy at City Hall. "We've had that cat five years, and there's never been a question," the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper quoted White as saying. "That cat doesn't have anything to do with whether somebody can have their puppy at City Hall. That cat doesn't hurt anybody... The council just went out and did this on their own because they don't like cats."

White said he will call for the council to reconsider its decision at the upcoming July 12 meeting.

In a perhaps not unconnected event, a White Settlement firefighter was killed while riding his m/cycle on Saturday. It was a hit and run.

If anyone wants to find out about the name of the place: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/13/us/a- ... .html?_r=0
