I think it's time for a clue of some kind (not that it would help me, but it might help someone).

And another quote:
Knox: What are you cooking?
Ives: It's, uh... stew.
Knox: Need any help?
Ives: No, no, no. Perhaps later you might... contribute.

More obscure than Eating Raoul

Harsh black comedy

Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce or Terence Stamp

Yeah, didn't think it would help me.

I'd argue it did since you've narrowed the list down to movies starring one of three actors.

Here is a question on a basic rule for this game: can you only guess based on your current knowledge, or may you do some non-quote research to narrow down movie choices?

With all respect to CP, this is an obscure movie that, outside our two stalwarts, maybe one or two here have even heard of, let alone seen. According to its box office, no more than a few hundred thousand saw it when it came out 15-20 years ago. I would think you could do a "rhymes with" and most of us would still be clueless (a common condition for me) :)

I'm not sure what you mean there, Long Run...

Would you mean that say in this specific case, it would be okay to do a search for the three actors that are already out as clues until you found the one that was in a movie that would match up with the other clues?

Do you mean if a clue were given that gave one of the actors in the movie (as in the current case) you could just go to the IMDB listing for that actor and guess the movie that seems to fit the clue best? (Or even just go down the list and guess movie after movie until you got the right one)

It seems to me that would make this more a data-mining game than a movie knowledge game.

Or do you mean something else?

I'd say that research NOT based on the quote (as LR suggests) should perhaps be allowed. Otherwise this bids fair to become a three man contest to see who can pee highest up a wall. (Hint: Googling "Hugo weaving black comedy" didn't lead to anything of interest).

ETA: I see LJ's in support of peeing

I guess that is what I meant in asking the question, which was just responding to CP's clues that are lost on those of us (the majority) who have never heard of the movie. If little-known movies are put up, how is this different than Gob starting a "guess the music group with a lyric" (Alex, I'll take UK Punk Bands that never had a record deal and play in pubs with less than 50 seats). I'm fine with it either way, and I will follow along -- and you and BigRR are good sports at letting others take a stab -- but I was just asking the question.

Seems to me the challenge of this game is to suggest a quote from a movie that all or nearly all have heard of (and hopefully, most have seen), but the quote is still hard to tie to a movie.

I think that research of any kind defeats the intent. That being said, I don't believe the intent is to think of some art house flick that no one else would have seen. If the challenge becomes to provide a quote that no one is able to guess, because it comes from an obscure flick that never saw release beyond second tier film festivals and art houses, the game becomes boring pretty quickly. I am not a movie buff by any means, but when it has been my turn I have pretty much always chosen films that have won at least one significant Oscar, and/or have been nominated for several. That may have been more a function of my limited knowledge of films than of any deliberate intent, and I do not suggest making it any sort of rule, but I deliberately avoided choosing any of the gay- or AIDS-themed films that are in my DVD collection, for example, because I know that they would have had limited audiences, even when they had general theatrical release.

I disagree with Long Run in that I don't think someone should have had to memorize a fim's dialogue in order to recognize the quote, the quote should be something that is evocative of the film, even if not necessarily a recognizable catch phrase.

Yeah but the problem there Long Run, is what I might think "nearly all have heard of and most have seen" could be quite different from what somebody else thinks could be the case...

I'd have bet money that somebody would have gotten The Devil's Advocate...(Especially after I posted the longest soliloquy from the movie)

I sometimes think in order to meet the "nearly all have heard of and most have seen" criteria we'd have to limit it to movies that won at least three Academy Awards and are no more than 20 years old...

I also think that there's a value to the lesser known movies, in that once the title is revealed and a little bit is said about them, perhaps some folks who haven't seen them might think that they would like to check them out...

I think that rather than turning this into a data-mining contest, maybe a better approach might be to limit the amount of time that a particular movie quote is out there and therefore, "churn" the selections more quickly...

Say for example, if nobody gets the answer after two days, the person who came up with it gives the answer and posts a new one...

And perhaps on their second movie they would make a good faith effort to come up with an easier pick than the first one they did in that round...

And then if two days after that still nobody has gotten the new one, they can post something like "Houston we have a problem"... 8-)

I've also been trying lately to limit myself to answering only one a week, (but I've been adding clues when time has passed and nobody seems to be getting one I know even if I didn't post it.)

And I chose this one because I thought the other one I had in mind would be too obscure. (Fifteen years older and not as well recieved by critics). It just so happens to be one of those movies that defies categorization and as such never got wide press. Too fanciful to be a period piece not bloody enough to be horror too bloody to be drama. And to top it all off doesn't take itself to seriously while still succeeding in building up tension.

I post movies that I like that may have been overlooked by a wide audience

That's what I would have thought about Now, Voyager, especially after I outlined the entire plot. I thought, it's one of Bette Davis's most well known roles, surely there are a few people who have seen it. I guess I have to remember that doesn't necessarily mean anything for someone who isn't gay (ditto for movies starring Joan Crawford, etc.).

I totally agree, I just did not express myself very clearly. fwiw, I think the two films mentioned, Devil's Advocate and Now Voyager, are perfectly good films for this, but for whatever reason just did not fall into the collective knowledge of the group.

Okay, I guess it's a safe bet that nobody else is going to get this, (except Big RR of course 8-) ) so I might as well go ahead, so we can move on:

Okay, since CP is taking his time sweet time verifying that I have the correct answer, (and I'm 100% certain I'm correct) I'm going to go ahead with the next quote:
you behave as if stupidity were a virtue. Why is that?
And here's an additional non-quote clue: (Maybe adding a non-quote clue at the beginning is something we consider doing as a general rule.)

The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards, and features five major, well-known Hollywood actors in starring or supporting roles...
