Just looked again and saw the female mountie, so cool! Love the optics in Canada regarding women in government around your feminist (and hot, and TALL!) PM, Scooter. What is the pay disparity for Canadian women, is it any better than the U.S.?

Checked my beds at the country club this morning, then home hanging out with the family. Burgers & dogs on the grill, pasta & veggie salads, ice cream & red, white & blue iced cupcakes is our working class American 4th of July feast. :D

Already today we are reassuring spooked dogs as illegal fireworks are going off all around, but it's not nearly as bad as Montana where the cacophony was nearly non-stop for days.

This, apparently, is considered only suggestive:
It is illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. The law prohibits any article designed to produce a visible or audible effect.
Happy Independence Day my fellow ugly Americans!

Hell, I have been taking fireworks orders for my coworkers since mid-June!

My uncle's dog is very frustrated. Every time he hears fireworks...he runs to the hook where his leash hangs and expects to go for a ride!

What other kinds of effects are there?
Oh yeah.....

In Pa, one can buy just about any type of fireworks as long as the buyer is not a PA resident and the buyer promises not to light them off in the state of Pa.

Spent sunday at a bar-b-q at the fire department at the lake house. At 9:30pm they had a great fireworks display. We were so close we had shrapnel falling on us. 55minutes of fantastic fireworks display. And when it was over, it took all of 1 minute to get out of the parking lot (aka hay field).

Saturday (on the pond) and Sunday (on the seawall) fireworks were viewed from my second floor deck on my chaises. We just had to get up and walk inside.

Monday we were at a party at the far end of town. Amazing sunset, views directly across the harbor to Boston, and you could see multiple displays in the distance, and the host had his own righty on the beach below. Then we stayed around to watch Boston too (which is always late).

John Adams said this day should be celebrated with fireworks and bonfires across the nation. I agree wholeheartedly!

We have those, too. Not in my exact neighborhood anymore, but at the beach down the street they had one Sunday night, late.

I've yet to see a bonfire, but I could understand them being on the beach.

We went to our daughter's house to see fireworks from her upper back deck. She guaranteed us a good show, for free. Sure enough, the sky was very well lit up from about 9:20 until we headed back home about 10:30. All of it was within the city limits where fireworks that go over 6 feet are illegal. I think the police just sit and wait for a "real" incident. There was waaaaay too much going on for them to make a dent in enforcing the laws, so why bother?

Since there was a heavy rain Saturday night into Sunday, there was very little danger of fire. Some parts of the county reported up to 7". I had about 4" at my house. The local airport, where the OFFICIAL measurement is taken, reported 5-1/2". There was some localized street flooding, and stalled cars in high water.

In Plymouth, MA the fireworks barges caught fire and all exploded in one big ka-boom. Luckily, none of the fireworks engineers were harmed.

Been listening to stories all morning of blown off hands, fingers, faces, etc. in fireworks incidents around the country. Checking out the stats on fireworks deaths and injuries at the Consumer Product Safety Commission, I'm glad for the laws in MA and believe firmly that the fireworks should be left to the professionals.

No reason we can't focus our regular citizen efforts on celebrating by way of feasting, just as we do Thanksgiving.

I can't imagine being one of the parents clueless enough to hand off a sparkler to a 5 year old and have that sparkler malfunction and that baby lose an eye or hand - as happens every 4th, children under 5 account for 40% of injuries by fireworks. Happy 4th, indeed!

I spent the afternoon/evening at a friend's house. We grilled some delicious sausages; wildboar/jalapeno, and some lamb/merguez, along with corn, zucchini and potatoes from various gardens (hers, mine and the local grocery store).

We had planned to go to the local fireworks display (a mile or so away), but her neighbors were setting off so many fireworks in the street (and it turns out we could see the mile-away show from the front yard), that we stayed put and enjoyed the show. The added bonus was that we could take turns going in to comfort the dog who was hiding in the shower. Poor thing hates fireworks.

Fireworks don't bother my dog. The first few he hears he is lookng to find where the noise came from. By the tenth, he is back taking a nap.
But if I start the tractor or weedwacker or motorcycle, he is pawing at the door trying to get into the house.
But he will chase trucks (especially the noisiest ones) if given the chance.
Go figure.
:shrug

My daughters dog is not bothered by fireworks either. Power tools (circular saw, router, jig saw, etc) are her "triggers".

This is the same dog that has to be locked in the house when anyone is mowing the lawn; he chases and snaps at the wheels on the lawnmower!

We had a lovely foggy and drippy weekend, great for the redwoods stressed by drought and great for those of us, like me, who are concerned about wild lands fires set off by fireworks in the hands of idiots.

Nice get together at a friends' house where my social circle expanded, as it often does. And where I was reminded just how many people care about, believe in, and will talk at length about, astrology.

The fireworks show made a lot of noise too. But innocent of deceptive intent, it was over soon.
