Bonus points if you can name the Civil War hero who uttered the quote, and not just the movie. ;)

Hmmm.  Not "Glory", BSG, but you say a Civil War hero delivered the quote.  And earlier, LJ said that Meade should get this one.

Dr. Watson, it is elementary deduction.  The film is "Gettysburg", and the quote was delivered by none other than Meade himself — probably when he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac on the eve of the battle that turned back the Confederacy and quite literally saved the Union.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

played by the scenery and mustache chewing Jeff Daniels

Gettysburg

Edit
Damn! BB got in before me. Wrong about Meade though

Meade didn't get a damn word in the movie. Meade wrote this in one of his famous (sic) letters:
You will be intrigued to learn that Lyman, no mean sketcher himself, speculates that one day there will come a public lantern show, a kinegraph he called it, depicting important events such as the battle at Gettysburg. I fear that if such should come to pass in our lifetimes, then a devotee of Sickles will influence the manufacture, so that I shall nowhere be found within it.

Meade, far be it from me to commit lèse-majesté.  I defer to your station and give you the honor; lead on!
Besides, I should be at work right now anyway instead of on this keyboard.

Extra kudos to Meade for getting the source 'character' right - Lt. Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, wounded 6 times during the Civil War, ultimately made Brigadier General and awarded the Medal of Honor.
On April 12, 1865, Brigadier General Chamberlain received the Confederate surrender of arms. Rising to the occasion, the general ordered his men to salute their vanquished foes.

No, sorry BB. You won it - the movie title is the holy grail. If nominated, I shall not quote!

I don't see where it's a problem if somebody wins and wants to give their turn to somebody else...

Of course that person can also decline, as appears to be the case here...

Alumnus of Bowdoin College, Brunswick Maine, Chamberlain was a Professor there when the war broke out and he volunteered to serve. Later he became Governor of Maine and, I believe, President of the College. They have a nice museum there, in his former home.

There is a village in Maine named for him, in the same town where my Mom used to live (larger "towns" contain smaller "villages").

I thought Daniels actually played that role rather well...

(Of course when the comparison is playing Dumber in Dumb and Dumber, it's not a real high bar...)

He also turned in a respectable performance as George Washington in The Crossing

And he played an excellent psycho up against Clint Eastwood in the underrated Blood Work:

All right, Meade.
Wait a minute.  You're telling me a 10-inch owl has a 50-mile mating radius?  Why don't they just fornicate someplace else?  What, a five billion dollar deal falling apart because of this?  Why doesn't somebody just shoot me in the head?
Sorry for the delay, but the boss advised me that if I didn't come in to work on Sunday I wouldn't need to come in to work the rest of the week either.  And I know he wasn't offering me time off with pay.....

So far — you folks aren't even close!  Time for a hint:

There are no less than SIX Academy Award winners in the cast.

None of which for this movie. There was a Golden Raspberry nominee for one of them for this movie though.

Yes, but this movie was panned by many of the critics...
