A bill to scrap daylight saving time has just made its way through another Senate committee, which means California may be closer to standard time year round.
In an interview with the Sacramento Bee, Assemblymember Kansen Chu (D-San Jose) - who authored the bill - said, "Daylight saving time is an institution that has been in place largely without a question for more than half a century." Chu continued, "I think we owe it to the general public to be given the opportunity to decide for themselves whether or not daylight saving time ought to be continued."
Chu presented Assembly Bill 385 to the State Senate Appropriations Committee on August 11, 2016. The bill was initially introduced in 2015 and written to put an end to daylight savings time as we know it.
Chu also cited statistics in the bill that link daylight savings time to a higher heart attack rate, traffic accidents and fatalities and energy waste.
After several amendments last year, the bill made its way to the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee in June and eventually to the State Senate Appropriation Committee this past week.
After clearing the Senate committee, the bill is now headed to the Senate floor. If the bill passes and receives Gov. Jerry Brown's approval, California voters will see the bill on the ballot no later than 2018.

Check out Jarl having a positive take on this. If i was still a Golden State voter i would be a big yes on this too.

Absolutely NOT
I love daylight savings time, I wish we had it all year 'round...
Leave it to the chuckle heads in Sacramento to come up with this horrible idea...
Fortunately to be put on the ballot it requires a 2/3 vote of both houses of the legislature, so hopefully this will die on the floor...

I think for most people it is the change that is most bothersome. Go to 'daylite savings' year round.

I've got a box full of rotary phones somewhere out in the garage, and I *LOVE* DST!

I'll have you know that I ditched my old rotary phone and now have one you have to crank to get an operator.
Ain't technology grand?
And I have to disagree with you on scrapping DST, the majority of Californians and I would vote for this in a heartbeat.

If they're "somewhere out in the garage" that means you're not using them and you are at least caught up to the 1970s.Econoline wrote:I've got a box full of rotary phones somewhere out in the garage, and I *LOVE* DST!

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

... but if we must change 'em, let's put the clocks forward at 2pm on a Friday. And then put them one hour back at 8 pm on a Saturday
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

I've long thought we should put DST on and leave it there. When it ends in October, it's just like someone in Washington flipped a switch. Customers have no time to come in after work in the daylight, so they don't come in at all.

Nah, (well the prototype I did) I had the plant in Mexico build it. (no tpp for me, nafta all the way)
However, I did design it.
On a somewhat serious note (I think I mentioned this before), when I was working at Motorola, I was involved in the design of a cell-phone "like" device (for fireman/plolice/emergency depts, etc) and I did not own a cell phone at the time.
I do have one now, a tracphone. I got 180 minutes 3 months ago and have about 120 minutes left. I have to buy more as my "time limit" is approaching. You get three more months each time you buy minutes. I'll buy the minimum amount of minutes this time around and maybe use the phone more

We've had this discussion before - not changing time is fine in lower latitudes, but in higher ones, unless you want the sun coming up at 4AM in the summer or 9AM in the winter, you need to change the time in the fall and spring.

I agree Scooter.
Re: I REALLY WANT THIS BILL TO PASS IN SACTO!
If the bill passes in Sacramento, California.................it stands to reason that only those living in California would have to worry about it.

It also became a general discussion on DST to which several non-Californians contributed their opinions. Deal.
