Depp divorce charity

Post by Gob »

She said it wasn't about money and on Thursday Amber Heard confirmed she is giving away all of the $7 million divorce settlement she got from Johnny Depp.

The actress, 30, told TMZ she is donating the money to two charities: The ACLU, with a direction to use it to help defend battered women, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where she says she has worked as a volunteer for 10 years.

'Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves,' Heard said about her bitter divorce battle with her famous ex-husband.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

Let's hear it for altruism.

(Why don't I believe this?)

WTF? Far as I know the ACLU doesn't defend battered women - but there are many excellent national organizations that do. I call bullshit.

BSG--from the ACLU website:

Not sure how far they go in protecting women's rights generally, but it appears it is part of what they do.

I'll believe it when I see the ACLU cashing the check.

They posted it on their website, which is an acknowledgement of receipt of the funds. ACLU is a very transparent nonprofit, you can ask for and receive a copy of their annual budget if you desire.

"Actress Amber Heard announced yesterday she will give the American Civil Liberties Union half of her $7 million divorce settlement to support our work fighting violence against women. The other half of the settlement will be donated to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles..."

As I read this it does not mean she actually handed over $3.5M to the ACLU at this point. She's a shallow, Hollywood-type, of person. I'm still skeptical.

If one absolutely must contribute to the ACLU, I commend the former Mrs. Depp for earmarking the money for a worthy purpose...

Otherwise they could spend it on odious crap like trying to get serial killers off of death row, or filing lawsuits against school boards to prevent Valedictorians from giving thanks to God in their high school graduation speeches...

I do have a different opinion. Comes down to personal view of justice--can a prostitute be raped? Does an individual who is odious crap deserve the same rules of justice as nice people?

Same with that Valedictorian. I have heard no one who advocates for such valedictorians who also claims they are not Christian. Jesus advocated against such. See his instructions on how to pray, including do it privately, in your closet. Matthew 6:6

As has been said, all depends on whose ox is being gored. Politics AND religion. It is such a beautiful thing. Now if I just threw in something about LGBT that would be sex and all the taboos would be covered.

The ACLU are a great organization. No one else has done as much to protect civil rights as they. They are currently not on our list of supported groups but have been before and might be again in the future.

but about the OP, she remains a very wealthy young woman but I applaud her generosity.

The money has a lot to do with it ,how much do you think the Red Cross actually spends on the relief efforts ,eg;? The charity I used to give to,actually increased the given amount by 4 or more times by working gratis ,the RC gets about 10% to the victims ,dont know how much the ACLU gets to their "victims ".Some of these charities (while most are helpful ) have a poor rate of "trickledown".

Here's a great resource for checking such concerns: http://www.charitynavigator.org/

For the ACLU, which gets 5/5 stars, here are some metrics:
Financial Performance Metrics
Program Expenses
(Percent of the charity’s total expenses spent on the programs
and services it delivers) 85.2%
Administrative Expenses 5.6%
Fundraising Expenses 9.1%
Fundraising Efficiency $0.12
Working Capital Ratio (years) 2.40
Program Expenses Growth 6.2%
Liabilities to Assets 26.2%

That's a pretty neat trick, since it looks like the maximum number of stars is four... 8-)

Here's something that confuses me...

The ACLU, (Percent of the charity’s total expenses spent on the programs and services it delivers- 85.2% ) gets four stars,

https://www.charitynavigator.org/index. ... orgid=3247

While the American Red Cross, with a "Percent of the charity’s total expenses spent on the programs
and services it delivers" -90.5% only gets three... :shrug

https://www.charitynavigator.org/index. ... orgid=3277

I'm guessing that 85.2% goes to pay their lawyers. Sorry, no gold star from me.

How else do you expect them to defend the Bill of Rights other than through litigation in the courts?

I think the RC gets 10% to the people in need ,the rest goes to people like the former Prez ,Elizabeth Dole (what a dole out ) who years ago ago received a salary of 100 K ,'
(probably some perks too) they get less then a star from me . :nana
