We're about three hours away now...

I have to say that because of the asymmetrical standards involved, and the number of undecided (ie people who despite everything he has already said and done incredibly are still capable of being convinced to vote for him...a number large enough to bring him victory) I'm not at all comfortable about how this is going to wind up being perceived and spun...

It seems to me he has a lot simpler task to accomplish then she does...

If Trump can avoid shouting "Sieg Heil!" and throwing up on himself, the media will consider it a tremendous victory for him and a crushing blow to Hillary.

What is going on with the Donald's breathing? Is it just a runny nose or something else? He is taking a big closed mouth sniff at the end of nearly every sentence (in the first five minutes)

I do not like the way this is going. Trump appears to have 'facts' at his fingertips. Of course he is wrong on most things as usual; but I wish that Holt would keep a little better control of it.

What's needed is a microphone cut-off button (one for each of 'em) that the moderator can use to cut 'em off. Mostly him, actually.

All right - if the ability to speak coherently in complete sentences - and even complete words (WTH are "nuclear" and "cyber"?) - is a good thing in a President, then HRC has the advantage there.

As usual, Trump wins on bluster. Clinton wins on being most nearly correct.

I feel Hillary will squeak by with the overall "win" if measured only by having more positive than negative talking points. Besides, Trump didn't look presidential to me.

All the news organizations are commenting on Drumpf's breathing difficulties. I get a feeling he'll blame it on a touch of walking pneumonia but, unlike his frail opponent who doesn't have the look nor stamina to be president, he toughed it out to show he'll hit the ground running on January 20th.

I thought he was absolutely godawful, especially as the debate wore on. He took the bait every time, wandering off into thin skinned defensiveness, and physically he looked terrible. Totally unprepared both substantively and stylistically.

Bizarrely, he seemed completely unaware of the fact that he was on camera while she was speaking, and he repeatedly failed to take advantage of openings he had, (like his allowing her to get away with her minimalist response on the emails...the response she should have been giving all along...rather than being prepared to recite the list of proven lies she told) which really showed his lack of basic preparation. HE was the one who came across as completely lacking "stamina"...

I understand that many people are now calling him Low Energy Don. I wouldn't necessarily agree, but that's what a lot of people are saying...

I disagreed with the substance of much of what she said, (particularly the usual Democratic fuzzy math class warfare boilerplate about how they're going to pay for their benefits wish list by getting "the rich" to "pay their fair share") But I realize that content wasn't aimed at me, it was aimed at energizing her party base, which is something the polls have indicated she desperately needs to do. It seemed to me that she probably made some progress on that front, and I think diving into that mode right at the outset to score those points was probably good strategy.

Overall from a style and presentation standpoint I thought she was very solid, and for the most part avoided getting into too much eye glazing policy detail.

But the strongest part of her performance by far was her handling of him. She came prepared with a number ways to bait him and as she saw he would take it, she chummed the waters...and he bit every time...

And every time he did, she was prepared with a follow up that really made her look good by contrast...

She didn't score a knock out blow, and he avoided a complete major meltdown moment. But she successfully goaded him into a lot of little meltdowns that will probably have a cumulative effect on undecided voters.

I don't think his performance last night will hurt him at all with his base, (yeah, like anything could do that) but I doubt he won over a single vote last night that he didn't already have. For anyone looking for some kind of reassurance that he's truly up to the job of being President before deciding to take a chance on him, he provided nothing last night.

I don't expect a huge shift in the polls (like something akin to bringing her back to where she was in August) but I do expect at the least she has ended his momentum and perhaps brought herself back up a point or two.

Donald Trump Blames Debate Performance on ‘Defective’ Microphone

Of all the explanations for Donald Trump’s consensus debate loss on Monday night, no one thought to blame his microphone.

Well, no one beside Donald Trump.

During a post-debate interview in the spin room following the GOP nominee’s first presidential showdown with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, Trump said, “They also had — they gave me a defective mic,” according to CBS News reporter Sopan Deb.

His account was echoed in an Associated Press report that said Trump “wonder(ed), was that on purpose?”

Trump has suggested for months, during the Republican primary and since, that the political machines on both sides have conspired to torpedo his candidacy, calling the system “rigged.”

“Nov. 8, we’d better be careful, because that election is going to be rigged,” Trump said at a rally in Columbus, Ohio on Aug. 1. “People are going to walk in and they’re going to vote 10 times, maybe, who knows?”

His and Clinton’s performances, not surprisingly, were the subject of great debate on Monday night, with a plurality of observers declaring Clinton the winner. A poll of debate watchers conducted by CNN/ORC scored the event 62 percent for Clinton to just 27 percent for Trump.

A similar poll administrated by Public Policy Polling was much closer, but still awarded the night to Clinton, 51 to 40.

Fox News’ pundits noted that Trump started strong, but his performance quickly devolved, with media critic Howie Kurtz noting, “Clinton has spent most of the evening on offense.”

This morning, the BBC and the Guardian (both English news sources) scored it a win for Hillary.

Me, I scored a wash out. I don't think it changed any votes. I believe the majority votes are in the 'against' column. Very small percentage for either the Donald or Hillary. In the voting booth they will pull the lever or mark the x against the other one. Traditionally, the pro politicians try to manage this kind of voter by reducing the turn out.

Yesterday FiveThirtyEight had it Hillary by just one electoral vote. That is too close for my comfort, possibly throwing into a lame duck GOP congress.

As Ray says, the only poll that matters in on November 8.

In a nutshell:

Trump was frankly incoherent for much of the debate, spewing a stream-of-consciousness word salad that made absolutely no sense and was often self-contradictory. I think Jim's review above pretty well encapsulates my view of the proceedings, too.

Oh yes he would. Even now he's probably working up a post to prove that Trump was right; the debate format was rigged, and they even made sure that he had a defective microphone as part of their attempt to sabotage him.
Interesting to note that it's the same lame excuse — it's all about the microphone — that Mr. Windbag offered back in January. It was bullshit then, and it's still bullshit now.

The worst thing about it (to me at least) is that, as bad as he did, he still did a lot better than I expected him to. Yes, it's like running the hundred meters in 10 minutes rather than half an hour, but 10 minutes is better than 30.
