A Thread For The Playoff Games Of A Sport That Matters..

What? In Philly we'd see this as the mere 'brew-haha' that it is.

This is reminiscent of my behavior many years ago. For many years I was a member of the Westinghouse Salaried Employee Association which was established in 1939. As a salaried employee the WSEA would act as an agent between Management and Employees. Not so much a union but an association that would bargain for certain employee rights and benefits, usually in tandem with UE-107, the blue-collar workers union.

Every year the WSEA would have a benefit banquet at the Chester Fire Hall catered by McAllister of Philly who were regionally famous for their delicious "Bookbinder's Style" snapper soup. (Served by white-gloved, tuxedoed, black men with engraved silver ladles and soup tureens.) After the meal there would be an awards and memorial ceremony, and wrapped up with an adult vaudeville-like act culminating with a striptease artiste' whose glory days were decades past.

Being one of the younger attendees at the dinner I would almost always get bored with the lack of stripper quality and quantity, however, one year in a moment of displeasure, I tossed an "empty" can of beer onto the stage -- not at, but near the reputed exotic dancer. My actions weren't a show stopper but it did cause a "brewhaha" of its own and I would later find out that my participation in future banquets was terminated.

As it was, I became the first and last WSEA member that was ever barred from participation in these association's dinners -- from inception in '39 to its end in 1989. Thousands would come and go but I was "the last man outstanding." Looking back -- yes, it was kind of stupid -- but whenever I meet an old colleague from my "Big Blue" days my antics at the banquet are sometimes brought up... and we all laugh.

So sit back, Ken Pagan, this, too, shall pass -- and have a brewsky on me.

I find myself in the unenviable position in which I have to agree with RayThom.  Pagan will probably get a minor fine which will be reduced to community service, have to make a public apology, and will be banned from the ballpark for the remainder of the playoffs.  For the next week perhaps he'll be the most despised person in Canada, like Steve Bartman was in Chicago, but eventually this will become nothing more than a tempest in a pot of tea.

And after seeing the video, there does seem to be some room for doubt.  Already others, using the same videos, are claiming that a woman a couple of seats away from his was the culprit.  So unless someone comes up with twenty-seven crystal-clear eight-by-ten color glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was, to be used as evidence against him, it's going to go down as no big deal.

If in Philly, it would have been batteries that were thrown. More accurate.

I like the Stanley Cup as well. A monstrosity? Perhaps, but an iconic one that is recognizable even though its design has nothing to do with hockey.

The Stanley Cup is the BEST trophy in all of sports.
The Stanley Cup (or to be more precise, Lord Stanley's Cup) was originally awarded back in 1892 as the "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" and is a bowl-like cup made of silver and measuring 18.5 cm (7.28 inches) in height and 29 cm (11.42 inches) in diameter.  Over the years, as each winning team inscribed its name and roster onto the cup (at its own cost, btw), additional rings to accommodate these were added, creating a stovepipe-like pedestal that far dwarfed the cup itself.  Finally, in the 1950s, the award was redesigned with a 'barrel' base that accommodates five rings of 13 team names/rosters each, surmounted with another three smaller rings displaying the winners from its first 35-plus years of existence so that the pedestal now resembles a multi-tiered wedding cake with a replica/reproduction of the original cup topping it all, resulting in what is now called the "Presentation Cup" which stands almost a full meter (89.5 cm/35.25 inches) tall and weighing close to 35 pounds (15.5 kilos).

More often than not, the Cup that is on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto during the off-season is not the actual cup. Since the NHL allows the winning team to have possession of the "Presentation Cup" for 100 days during the off-season and a more-recent tradition allows each player on the team to have one personal day with the trophy to do with it as they wish — within reason; in 1996 Colorado's Sylvain Lefebvre used it as a baptismal font for his new-born daughter — a specially-made "Replica Cup" stands in for the 'real' Cup during that time period.

And it's also the only trophy where mistakes made during the engraving go uncorrected.
  • ● Pat McReavy's name is misspelled "McCeavy" as a member of the 1941 Boston Bruins on the second cup created during the 1957–58 season.  McReavy's name was often misspelled as "McCreavy" on team pictures of the Boston Bruins.  When the Replica Cup was created in 1992–93, the misspelling was not corrected.
    ● Dickie Moore, who won six cups, had his name spelled differently five times (D. Moore, Richard Moore, R. Moore, Dickie Moore, Rich Moore).
    ● Glenn Hall's name was misspelled as "Glin" in 1951–52.
    ● Alex Delvecchio's name was misspelled as "Belvecchio" in 1954.
    ● Bob Gainey was spelled "Gainy" when he was a player for Montreal in the 1970s.
    ● Ted Kennedy was spelled "Kennedyy" in the 1940s.
    ● Toronto Maple Leafs was spelled "Leaes" in 1963.
    ● Boston Bruins was spelled "BQSTQN" in 1972.
    ● New York Islanders was spelled "Ilanders" in 1981.
    ● Justin Williams, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner of the 2014 Los Angeles Kings, was spelled "JUSTIN WILLIVIS."
    ● One name was later scratched out: Peter Pocklington, a former Edmonton Oilers owner, put his father's name, Basil, on the Stanley Cup in 1984; today, there is a series of 'X's over Basil's name.
    ● In 1996, Colorado Avalanche's Adam Deadmarsh's last name was spelled "Deadmarch".  It was later corrected, marking the first correction on the Cup.  Similar corrections were made in 2002, 2006 and 2010 for the names of Detroit Red Wings goalie Manny Legace ("Lagace"), Carolina Hurricanes forward Eric Staal ("Staaal"), and Chicago Blackhawks forward Kris Versteeg ("Vertseeg").

Ice Hockey is a game for younger people--even for the spectators.

I watched my first ice hockey game in 1973 in Philadelphia. It was from pretty decent seats, about half way up the stands. Later I went to a couple of games for the Washington DC team (played in Maryland) against the Philly Flyers. The seats were much better there and also much cheaper.

I could not follow the puck at any of the games. I could hardly find the puck, let alone see where it was going. The game is FAST!
My old eyes just could not keep up.

(Hint - SNAIL, there is no puck. They lie about that and just skate around swishing their bats. Later, some TV wizard inks in a black tiny thing and they add some ooohs and aaahs as commentary)

Sorry oldr

Meade, I think you meant that for snailgate. :shrug

I had season tickets to the Islanders from 77 to 80. (they raised the price too much after they won the cup)Top row of the colliseum straight up from the islanders bench. The "press box" (really just a row of folding chairs and some folding tables with typewriters) was right behind us. We had the only TV's in the place (for the presss boys) so we got to watch the replays. From that high up, I wasable to follow the puck pretty well, only losing it when it got right up to the boards on the bench's side.
Hockey is best watched live at the arena. Doesn't carry well to TV.

Nowadays the networks do cool stuff to highlight the puck and make it much easier for old fogeys to watch on TV.

Their "bats" Meade. This isn't cricket. They use sticks or more appropriately, hockey sticks. :nana

And I think oldr is right--as most of us get older, we become more far sighted, so we can see the puck from further away and not close up.

Once again I had to root around to find out where "Fox Sports 1" is in my cable channels, (since this is the only time of year I ever have occasion to watch it)....

For anyone in the same boat who would like to watch either of the NL playoff games today, here's a handy link:

http://www.foxsports.com/other/story/fi ... -tv-020214

All you have to do is plug in your zip code, and then you get a drop down list for providers in your area. Pick yours, hit submit, and the channel pops up...

For me it's channel 408...

Not great placement...
