Correction: the Italians do this better

Post by Scooter »

Caldari is about three miles from where my parents were born.
A town in Italy now has a wine fountain that lets people get free wine at all hours of the day

We think we’ve just found our happy place.

The town of Caldari di Ortona, Abruzzo, Italy, has always been a delightful destination. It’s a spot on a popular pilgrimage route, the Cammino di San Tommaso, and has glorious sights to be seen and vineyards to visit.

But recently, the town has introduced a feature that takes it from ‘ooh, I’d like to visit there, maybe’ to ‘TAKE ME THERE, NOW’.

If you visit Caldari di Ortona, you will find a fountain. But not just any fountain. We’re talking about a wine fountain, that dispenses free wine 24/7.

The fountain sits in the Dora Sarchese vineyard, and is open to everyone who walks by and fancies grabbing a glass.
It’s a joint project of the vineyard and a non-profit organisation that protects the pilgrimage route.

So it’s specifically designed to quench the thirst of all the people taking hikes along the pathway.

But realistically, there’s nothing to stop you from driving up to the vineyard in your walking boots and helping yourself.
Is anyone else now frantically looking up plane tickets for this weekend?

Oh sure, now they do it. :arg
Never was much of a wine drinker. Hope they never do this with JD. :o

I'll bet this is a real popular spot with the local teenagers on Friday and Saturday nights...

Most local teenagers have grown up around wine and could drink it at home if that's what they wanted - almost everyone around there has a bit of vineyard that they use to make some wine for their own use, and/or they bring the grapes to the communal cantina sociale where the wine is made and distributed to all the members. Those 16 and older can be served legally in restaurants and bars (but cannot purchase alcohol to take away until 18), so getting clandestinely drunk with one's friends is not a rite of passage as it is in the U.S. or Canada.

Not quite as good, but this is becoming more of a "thing", with wine on tap, like beer. Good idea as it saves a lot of glass bottle recycling:
