The Drip Drip Drip...
Re: The Drip Drip Drip...
Guin--I'll admit I didn't read the link (I really didn't want to read something called the Daily Howler), but I did read your post. FWIW, I never said it was a "howler"--just not an accurate statement of what she said, and a pretty feeble (and unnecessary) attempt to divert attention from a position which I think is perfectly defensible, and even necessary at times. why try to run from it?
Opinions may vary, but I think this would have been a good chance to address what she learned in Congress (et al.) about negotiation and compromise, and she ran from it.

The quote from the speech, with the line in question IN CONTEXT:
The exchange, from the debate:
She was asked a specific question, about a specific line from a specific speech--and she answered the question, concisely and accurately. Everything else is Republican spin.
CLINTON (4/24/13): You just have to sort of figure out how to—getting back to that word, "balance"—how to balance the public and the private efforts that are necessary to be successful politically, and that's not just a comment about today. That, I think, has probably been true for all of our history, and if you saw the Spielberg movie, Lincoln, and how he was maneuvering and working to get the 13th Amendment passed, and he called one of my favorite predecessors, Secretary Seward, who had been the governor and senator from New York, ran against Lincoln for president, and he told Seward, "I need your help to get this done." And Seward called some of his lobbyist friends who knew how to make a deal, and they just kept going at it. I mean, politics is like sausage being made. It is unsavory, and it always has been that way, but we usually end up where we need to be. But if everybody's watching, you know, all of the back room discussions and the deals, you know, then people get a little nervous, to say the least. So you need both a public and a private position. And finally, I think—I believe in evidence-based decision making. I want to know what the facts are. I mean, it's like when you guys go into some kind of a deal, you know, are you going to do that development or not, are you going to do that renovation or not, you know, you look at the numbers. You try to figure out what's going to work and what's not going to work.
The exchange, from the debate:
RADDATZ (10/9/16): This question involves WikiLeaks' release of purported excerpts of Secretary Clinton's paid speeches, which she has refused to release, and one line in particular, in which you, Secretary Clinton, purportedly say you need both a public and private position on certain issues. So, Tu from Virginia asks, is it OK for politicians to be two-faced? Is it acceptable for a politician to have a private stance on issues? Secretary Clinton, your two minutes.
CLINTON: Well, right. As I recall, that was something I said about Abraham Lincoln after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg movie called "Lincoln." It was a master class watching President Lincoln get the Congress to approve the 13th Amendment. It was principled, and it was strategic.
And I was making the point that it is hard sometimes to get the Congress to do what you want to do and you have to keep working at it. And, yes, President Lincoln was trying to convince some people, he used some arguments, convincing other people, he used other arguments. That was a great—I thought a great display of presidential leadership.
She was asked a specific question, about a specific line from a specific speech--and she answered the question, concisely and accurately. Everything else is Republican spin.

Agreed! And what Guin said, too.
It's a sensible answer and the only thing she might've done better was pitch it back to Trump somehow - "I m not saying m Lincoln but I aspire to follow his example of healing the Union".
Anyway the real weakness of that anecdote in its entire context is it supposes an audience for the movie or familiarity with the history and that's asking a lot from many Trump supporters and many Hillary supporters alike.

The only Lincoln movie Trump supporters probably know about is "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" —BoSoxGal wrote:Anyway the real weakness of that anecdote in its entire context is it supposes an audience for the movie or familiarity with the history and that's asking a lot from many Trump supporters and many Hillary supporters alike.
and most of them, I'm sure, believe it to be a documentary.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Abe was a vampire hunter? I like Buffy in that role better.

Why didn't John Kennedy become a boxer?RayThom wrote:BOO! HISS!Big RR wrote:Not only that, but the first jewish vampire hunter. I have it on good authority that he was shot in the temple.
Because just like Abe Lincoln, he couldn't take a shot to the head.

Can American politics get any more ridiculous?

Re: The Drip Drip Drip...

Republican planning to impeach Hillary? I thought it was a major plank in their platform to lock her up.
Re: The Drip Drip Drip...
Maybe they just figured out it would be a good idea to impeach her before they lock her up.
Re: The Drip Drip Drip...
yeah they can.
hide and watch.
but you had better stand behind a tree , not a bush, because the shrapnel is gonna fly far and wide

Not funny; of all the attacks on the Clintons I've always been most infuriated by the right wing's horrible speculations about Vince Foster's suicide. Nobody's suicide should ever be made light of in such fashion.Econoline wrote:
