Appointments R Us

Post by Sue U »

With Mike Pence leading the "transition team," it's nice to know that he makes appointments based on outstanding qualifications and merit! (I could link the Chicago Trib article, but Wonkette says it even more gooder.)

Pence Appoints Totally Random Non-Law-Practicing Lady As Indiana Judge, Because Go F*ck Yourself Is Why

By Robyn Pennacchia -

November 22, 2016 - 12:15pm

Tom McDermott, Jr., the mayor of Hammond, Indiana, is rather upset and confused after finding out — through social media — that Vice President-elect Mike Pence (who is still governor of Indiana, even though we forgot about that) went ahead and appointed a judge in his town without consulting with him first. And not only that, but a judge who has never even practiced law before.

“She admits she’s never practiced law, and she’s going to be a judge? This is unprofessional cronyism, and I have no confidence in this appointment,” McDermott told the Chicago Tribune. “This lady ran Sylvan Learning Centers.”

Amy Jorgensen, 46, does have a law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law, but has previously stated that she has never actually used it. Rather, she has run a bunch of Sylvan Learning Center franchises. For real, like, that was not a weird joke or anything. OH, and by sheer coincidence, we are sure, she also happens to be the chair of the St. John Republican Party.

Jorgensen, who was sworn in on Monday morning, will be replacing Judge Gerald Kray, who was also not told that his services would no longer be needed. Judge Kray was appointed to the position of Hammond City Court Judge by the Indiana Supreme Court after the previous judge died in April.

Via Chicago Tribune:
  • Jorgensen said in an email that she’s “very thankful and humbled to have been chosen by Vice President-Elect Governor Pence” and that she “was appointed because she was the best candidate, without regard to political support.”

“I look forward to working with current court personnel, as well as the Mayor’s office, to effectuate a smooth transition,” she said. “It is my understanding that Judge Pro Tempore Kray has been doing an outstanding job and I hope for his continued involvement.”

As to whether she has ever worked in a law-related position, however, she declined to answer, saying that Pence reviewed her entire application, resume, background and references and “confidently declared that she would ‘make an excellent judge.'”
Really — he read the whole resume of a person who has never actually practiced law, and who got her degree in law over 16 years ago, judging by this alumni profile, and who, since then, has been operating tutoring franchises, and thought “Oh yes, totally without regard to political support, this is a woman who should be a judge!”

Jorgensen does have her supporters, however. Lake County Republican Party Chairman Dan Dernulc says he thinks she’d be swell!
  • “I know Amy, and I think she will make an excellent judge,” he said, admitting he “wasn’t sure” if she’s ever held a law-related position. “Sometimes, people are elected into positions and are molded into the job.

“She has a few years to prove herself.”
Oh, a few years? That should be a very comforting thought to all the people who are going to go before her in court before she has time to get “molded” into the job, while she tries to remember all the law stuff she learned well over 16 years ago, and catch up on all the new law stuff that has happened since then. That should be really nice for them! Though, hey, perhaps she’ll have someone to tutor her in all of those things over at one of her Sylvan Learning Center franchises! Surely, she’ll figure it out in no time.

[Chicago Tribune]
Wonkette.

Oh, I checked the roll of Indiana attorneys. It appears that not only has she never practiced law, her law license was actually inactive until May 2016 -- when for some mysterious reason totally unconnected to any political appointment that might have suddenly become available she decided it was time to go back on active status because really the law is her life.

You can't make these things up.

I would guess Pence made a bet that he could appoint someone with no qualifications to the bench, and then made certain he won.

Electing judges is even more daft than appointing judges (well, I guess it depends on who's doing the appointing...but still...)

Agreed! I've seen some truly awful judges elected by popular vote.

We laugh when this kind of thing happens in some third world banana republic (showing all my prejudices in one go) as SOP - yet when it happens here we are incredulous. There is a great op-ed in today's NYT by Charles Blow. If you can't get behind their firewall I will try to cut and paste.

So far he hasn't hit Reagan's low marks for appointing a drug czar who was an addict and then making the same person education secretary who went on to lose millions of dollars playing slot machines.

Although in all fairness we have to compare this to the UK system in which we voted for Brexit on the grounds that we don't want those unelected bureaucrats in Brussels telling us what to do. So now we have an unelected prime minister; and a BJ (in more ways than one) for Her Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. You could not make this up.

UK prime ministers are rarely elected though.

And Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson is a fine politician.

The fact that less than half (5 of 12) have subsequently won a general election after becoming PM without one suggests to me that Britons are not particularly enamoured of the practice.

I wouldn't say rarely; but it's not uncommon that they become PM without winning a general election.

And Boris is a fine politician in the same sense as Trump. He wins elections. And in the same sense he is an absolute turd of a man. He does have the somewhat redeeming grace of a superb although misused intellect.

Depends on the job...

Personally I'm not all that upset by somebody being picked to head the Department of Education (the existence of which has done absolutely nothing to improve the quality of education in this country) who doesn't come with the seal of approval from the destructive union hacks at the NEA...

I'm going to reserve judgement on this one...The fact that she supports school vouchers is a big plus in my book...

ETA:
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a bitter political rival of Trump, praised DeVos' appointment on Wednesday, saying she is "an outstanding pick for Secretary of Education ... She has a long and distinguished history championing the right of all parents to choose schools that best ensure their children’s success. Her allegiance is to families, particularly those struggling at the bottom of the economic ladder, not to an outdated public education model that has failed them from one generation to the next."
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016 ... /94360110/
Choosing DeVos also shows that Trump is going beyond his circle of loyalists to make Cabinet picks. DeVos donated to Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, and Marco Rubio during the 2016 presidential primary, and in March she blasted Trump as an “interloper” who didn’t represent GOP values.

She and her husband are also raving homophobes, so if you want to move the country closer to herding us all into camps, I suppose she would be a good choice.

Do you have something else beyond her opposition to gay marriage? (On a search I did, that's all I could find)

I don't think opposing gay marriage equals being an advocate of herding gay people into concentration camps...
