I know the cunt remark is aimed at me, Guin, but I'm sorry, I just don't think it's such a big deal to use that word.

Neither does Eve Ensler, for that matter.

Nor most Brits, who use it casually.

It may really, really bother YOU, but I have the same attitude as Ensler - reclaiming it removes that horrible stigma that you seem to attach to it, still.

It's not a terrible word, not more terrible than most, and many people - including many feminist women of a younger generation - even like to use it while talking about (or during) sex, etc.

Everyone has their own morality but in matters such as this, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to cast such absolute judgments on others.

I agree with you that the intentional objectification of women here has at times been a big much, which I why (partly in deference to you) I removed the BoSox gal photos that the boys were salivating over and replaced them with an image of Wally's sister Tessie.

Scooter's GIF was graphic pornography. I understood entirely why he posted it, in the context of wesw telling us again that our concerns for the safety and well-being of our LGBTQ friends was stupid and unwarranted, as he denies outright that any of the attacks that are happening against such citizens are actually happening.

I can certainly understand why Crackpot and others might not want that image to play attached to every one of Scooter's excellent posts, thus making it near impossible for them to view the forum at work, with their children around (my niece is often around when I'm logged in), etc.

OFFS -- no BSG, my comment was not aimed at you at all. You never crossed my mind. My objection is not and never has been to the word cunt per se, but to its use as a insult. A vital part of a woman's body is not an insulting thing. I've posted here multiple times on this issue, and also stated "I have a cunt, but that doesn't make me a cunt." It's similar to my objection to using "girl" as an insult. And citing to the Brits as evidence that its fine to use the word that way does not help the case; they can be a sexist and racist lot.

My point was do we tolerate free speech or not? If you don't want to see it, turn off sigs and avatars, skip Scooter's posts, or ask him to take it down. But a request coming from a moderator is censorship (and just slightly ironic, considering the content of some of those mod's posts).

For the record, Gob didn't ask me to take it down, and I did so when other posters explained why it was problematic for them, because I decided that wes was simply not worth the bother it was causing others (and I chose not to post it again to call out his blatant lie about the content).

It is not "censorship" to moderate one's comments in light of the circumstances in which they may be accessed and in deference to the reasonable sensibilities of those with whom you are conversing. It is merely civility and politeness. It is not always necessary to use the strongest or most extreme mode of communication to make a point forcefully.

ETA: Not that I need to explain, but my comment was based on my own observations and multiple conversations with my Swede about this phenomena. He is over there regularly, and comes back shaking his head quite a bit, about the overt racism, sexism, and classism he sees. Now, to be fair, I'm not saying my countrymen are so much better (they're not, and they just proved it), but it feels more institutionalized there in a way that it does not feel here.
