Another truck attack

Post by Gob »

At least 12 people have been killed and about 50 more injured after a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin in what is believed to have been a deliberate attack.

The vehicle, a large black Scania articulated lorry, crashed into the market outside the landmark Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church on Monday evening.

German police said one person found in the lorry died of injuries sustained in the incident, while a suspect – thought to be the driver – was arrested about 100 metres away in the Tiergarten. Police have not confirmed either person’s identity.

Doctors treating patients at the scene and in clinics across Berlin reported a high number of fractures and internal injuries – including bleeding and damaged organs. One doctor said operations would be going on through the night with many of the injured in a life-threatening state so off-duty doctors across Berlin were being brought in.

A witness told the Guardian that the truck hit the market at speed. “It was not an accident. The truck was going 40mph. It was in the middle of a square, there are main roads either side, [where it could have come from]. But it showed no sign of slowing down,” said Emma Rushton, a British tourist.

She said it crashed into a stall only a few feet from where she and her friend were standing. “We heard a massive bang. About eight to 10 feet in front of us was where the lorry ploughed through. It ploughed through the stall where we bought our mulled wine.

“It ploughed through people and the wooden huts, it tore the lights down. Everything went dark, it was black and there was screaming. It was awful,” she said.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

and of course, the opportunist Trump has already claimed it to be a terrorist attack (it may or may not be, but he gave no proof--and we all know he avoids security briefings) and tried to whip up his support to eradicate the terrorist organizations that prey on Christians in their communities and places of worship. But then, id you expect any less?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

While Kennedy's statement can be translated in that manner, I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt.  He probably took the American phrase "I am a Berliner" and translated that to German, not being fully aware that
1) the article ('ein') before the word 'Berliner' was not needed and
2) a 'Berliner' was in fact a specific type of jelly-filled pastry more commonly known in America as a 'bismarck'.

Not to mention that if you type "Ich bin Berliner" into Google Translate it returns "I am Berliner" ... which just doesn't sound correct to an American's ear.

I would bet that JFK had someone do the translation for him--after all he was in Germany and had many translators on hand and I'd bet he would use them for a speech on the world stage. I am not certain what the proper way to say you are one with the residents of Berlin would be, but this did appear to be a faux pas, albeit a fairly minor (and somewhat humorous) one, probably due as much to JFK's style and poise as anything else--can you imagine if Nixon had said the same thing?

I wonder if the translator used a different dialect of German?

Yes it is, but it's also what they call a jelly filled donut out West. (And Wiki verifies it is also a common descriptor in the Midwest and parts of Canada).

You'd lose the bet.
The "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech is in part derived from a speech Kennedy gave at a Civic Reception on May 4, 1962, in New Orleans; there also he used the phrase "civis Romanus sum" by saying "Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was to say, 'I am a citizen of Rome'.  Today, I believe, in 1962 the proudest boast is to say, 'I am a citizen of the United States'.  And it is not enough to merely say it; we must live it.  Anyone can say it.  But Americans who serve today in West Berlin — your sons and brothers — [...] are the Americans who are bearing the great burden."

The phrases "I am a Berliner" and "I am proud to be in Berlin" were typed already a week before the speech on a list of expressions to be used, including a phonetic transcription of the German translation.  Such transcriptions are also found in the third draft of the speech, from June 25.  The final typed version of the speech does not contain the transcriptions, which are added by hand by Kennedy himself."
(see image below and note how he indicated that "ich" is to be pronounced "ish" and "Berliner" is to be pronounced "Bear-lee-ner" with the emphasis on the second syllable)

And if it were me giving the speech, I'd probably have said something like "Ich sind auch ein Bürger auf Berlin!"

Back to the OP, did anyone else see coverage indicating another such planned incident was thwarted - involving a 12 year old native born German boy of Iraqi descent?

If the Russians are such great hackers, why aren't they all over these online ISIS recruiters?!

It's good to see that the Italians whacked him. They should toss him into the bay.
