I'm Sure Somebody Here...

Post by Lord Jim »

Will figure out a way to make this Ivanka's fault, or at least try to justify the lout's behavior:
Not-so-friendly skies: Passenger harasses Ivanka Trump on JetBlue flight

Ivanka Trump experienced some unexpected turbulence before takeoff on a Thursday morning JetBlue flight.

As TMZ reported , the daughter of President-elect Donald Trump was sitting with family on a commercial flight leaving New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when a passenger began taunting her.

“Your father is ruining the country,” the passenger yelled at her, according to the website. “Why is she on our flight? She should be flying private.”

But Ivanka Trump, who was in the coach section, [ :?: ] sat calmly, diverting her three children's attention from the disturbance. As JetBlue personnel escorted the passenger off the flight, he continued screaming, “You’re kicking me off for expressing my opinion?!”

The husband of the passenger, Hunter College professor Matthew Lasner, posted a now-deleted tweet an hour before takeoff: “Ivanka and Jared at JFK T5, flying commercial. My husband chasing them down to harass them. #banalityofevil”[No matter what their lawyer may tell them to say now, that looks like an admission of guilt to me]

JetBlue released a statement about the incident, saying, "The decision to remove a customer from a flight is not taken lightly. If the crew determines that a customer is causing conflict on the aircraft, the customer will be asked to deplane, especially if the crew feels the situation runs the risk of escalation during flight. In this instance, our team worked to re-accommodate the party on the next available flight."

I'm not super surprised that Ivanka Trump would take a commercial flight, though I do admit to being somewhat surprised that she'd be flying coach...

But be that as it may, she has a perfect right to do so, and just like anyone else she ought to be able to take that flight without being aggressively and repeatedly verbally harassed by some loud-mouthed oaf who thinks his right to "express his opinion" extends to haranguing a woman seated on a plane flight with her three young children...

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Nor me. The passenger (reading between the lines, a man, married to a man?) deserved the eviction. If the incident had occurred while the flight was in the air he probably still should have been evicted. While I sympathize with his point of view, this was neither the place nor the manner in which to express it, nor the person to whom it should have been expressed.

Ivanka has placed herself squarely in the center of the Trump campaign, transition & plans for a key role in the future administration, so I think she's a fair target of public criticism.

He wasn't nearly as obnoxious in presentation as the pro-Trump loudmouth who got banned for life by Delta a week or two ago - but if they're going to be consistent, it was a perfectly appropriate response by JetBlue.

This kind of thing is generally why the President and close family don't typically fly coach commercial.

eta: the subsequent social media response - in which details of the man's (& husband's) home/employement addresses have been published and violence against both has been encouraged - is the truly disgusting bit of the story, IMHO.

Oh, I agree completely with that...

And she gets plenty of public criticism, in the media and on social media, (and also undoubtedly a slew of hate emails, blog posts, and tweets)...

But she is unquestionably a public figure, (and a very influential one) and that all kind of comes with the territory...

But that still doesn't excuse or justify what happened to her on this plane. I'm glad we're in agreement that JetBlue was correct in removing this guy...

It's also true that her father has done much to inflame an already poisonous and bitterly divided political environment, which has greatly contributed to inciting the bad behavior that some have engaged in on both sides. (Though to the best of my knowledge, she hasn't played any role in that. Everything I've seen indicates that if anything, she's tried to be a moderating influence on Drumpf.)

That is also of course completely unacceptable and repugnant behavior. And especially in the case of anyone making threats of death or violence, I would like to see them prosecuted to the full extent of the law, no matter what side they are on or what they claim as their motivation.

If a few of the low-life creeps who engage in this terrorizing behavior have the book very publicly thrown at them, maybe it will start to have a deterrent effect on this sort of behavior and help to lower the level of occurrences.
