FOX 32 NEWS - Chicago investigators are questioning four African-Americans after a Facebook Live video shows a group of people torturing a white mentally disabled man while someone yelled "F*** Trump!" and "F*** white people!"
Chicago police were made aware of the video Tuesday afternoon. A young African American woman streamed the video live on Facebook showing at least four people holding the young white man hostage.

It's sickening. You know it makes you wonder what would make individuals treat somebody like that," Police Supt. Eddie Johnson added.
In the video, the victim is repeatedly kicked and hit, his scalp is cut, all while he is tied up with his mouth taped shut.
Detectives think the victim, who appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s, met some acquaintances in northwest suburban Streamwood and they drove him to Chicago in a stolen vehicle, Guglielmi said.
The victim is then believed to have been held hostage and tortured in an apartment in the 3400 block of West Lexington on the West Side, Guglielmi said.
On Tuesday afternoon, police officers spotted the victim walking on a street on the West Side wearing shorts, Guglielmi said. Because it was unusual to see a man in shorts in the cold weather, the officers stopped to talk to the man, who appeared disoriented, and he was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Toxicology tests were performed at the hospital to determine if the victim was under the influence of anything.

Video of the attack shows the 18-year-old victim cowering in a corner of a room, tied up with his mouth bound in plastic. His eyes exude fear as his attackers get ready for their next act.

One assailant slashes his sweatshirt with a knife. The young woman streaming the abuse on Facebook Live repeatedly turns the camera back to herself.

An attacker then takes a knife to the victim's head, carving a patch off his scalp.
For the next 25 minutes, the abuse continues for the world to see. The victim is repeatedly kicked and punched, but his screams are apparently ignored.

The young woman broadcasting the attack appears dismayed that she's not getting more attention online.
"Y'all not even commenting on my s***," she tells a friend during the live stream.

Apart from the despicable savagery of this cowardly and sadistic attack, I never cease to be amazed by the mind-bending stupidity of people who video themselves committing these kinds of vile acts, and then broadcast them to the whole world via social media...

It's as though they're saying, "Attention law enforcement! We just committed a horrible crime, and here's all the evidence you need to find, arrest, and convict us."

What I don't like about idea of "hate crimes" is that IMO what these people did is already highly criminal, utterly prosecutable and worthy of the maximum punishment - regardless of what words they were shouting. Kidnapping, torture, assault - these are already crimes.

The same goes for anyone who hurts, injures (whatever) homosexuals - "why" they did it is because they are vicious thugs. The victim's color or sexual orientation should not be relevant at all - these thugs need to be charged with the crime they have committed, not one that somebody makes up to show how "with it" they are.

In what seems to me to be a related issue, here in SA the Parliament is considering a draconian "hate crimes' bill which criminalizes "hate speech". Under that law, if BB was posting from South Africa, he'd be liable to extreme punishment for his post (if anyone cared to inform on him) - yes, for using those terms BSG highlighted. The obvious danger (aside from free speech infringement) is that the government will have the ability to define what constitutes hate speech against any "person or group". Of course, a "person or group" may be determined to be.... er... the government, the president, the ANC. Surely not?

Thank you all. I much appreciate the varied experience and viewpoints expressed here. I know Germany has some laws that criminalized some opinions, such as statements supporting the holocaust denial. I believe here in the USofA, there are no 'hate crimes'. There are not criminal laws prohibiting expressions of hate. Rather, what the news reports talk about in the 'hate crime' stories is that in many jurisdictions when an individual or group does something criminal, if there is any expression of hate included in the act, then the potential punishment is increased.

I don't believe we have yet reached the Brave New World where one can be jailed just for hating an other person.

Well this forum was about a despicable current event, but if you want to talk despicable historical events, I say this:

If “A” wants revenge for something that happened in history they should at least leave children and the retarded out of it and target adults. It seems to me as humans we should be able to agree at least on that principle. And the problem with revenge is that “A” gets revenge for something that happened in history and then “B” get revenge for that and then “A” gets revenge and then “B” gets revenge and “A” gets revenge and on and on it goes.

Chicago torture video: No bail for 4 suspects

(CNN)Four young people accused of torturing a Chicago special-needs teen and broadcasting the incident on Facebook Live were ordered held without bail Friday afternoon.

The suspects face hate crime, kidnapping, unlawful restraint and battery charges in their alleged role in the attack.

"I'm wondering where was the sense of decency that each of you should have had?" Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil asked the suspects. "When the mom reached out asking about his child ... Where was it? I don't see it."

The decision to deny them bail brought cheers in the courtroom.

After the hearing, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonetti told reporters the 18-year-old victim suffers from schizophrenia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. He was friends with one of the suspects, Jordan Hill, and was voluntarily spending time with him, starting on New Year's Eve, she said.

The attacks started in the back of a stolen van after Hill apparently became angry because the victim's mother called and asked about her son's location, Antonetti said.

Hill took the teen to a third-floor apartment in Chicago, where he was bound and gagged, beaten over several days by the two male and two female suspects and forced to drink toilet water, with some of the attacks broadcast on Facebook Live, she said.

"During the course of the attack, defendant Hill communicated with the victim's mother and demanded $300 ransom in exchange for getting her son back," Antonetti said.

The youth finally escaped Tuesday when police came to the apartment because the suspects argued with second-floor residents who'd complained about the noise, she said. The victim was treated at a hospital and released.

Jordan Hill, 18; Tesfaye Cooper; 18; Brittany Covington, 18; and Tanishia Covington, 24, have each been charged with a hate crime, felony aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Hill, Cooper and Brittany Covington also face charges of residential burglary. Hill faces an additional charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Public defenders Wendy Fawcettt and Megan Tomlinson provided personal details about the defendants, saying Tanishia Covington has two children and Brittany Covington worked as a cashier and attended church.

Hill lives with his grandmother and six siblings, ages 14 to 20, and played football in high school, the public defenders said. He'd spent time in jail in for prior convictions, the defenders said.

Cooper lives with his mother and six siblings, has a paralyzed brother and had been arrested previously for possession of a controlled substance, the public defenders said.
