I just signed up for a month of free HBO via Amazon Prime, and am about to start episode 4, season the first of Game of Thrones. (I've already binged the first 3 tonight!)

Now I understand all the hype.

Will read this thread later, after I've seen the whole series and can't be wounded by spoilers. Yes, I've managed to bury my head in the sand about this show and so other than knowing there's going to be a bloodbath at a wedding at some point, I know nothing.

Ha! Mrs. M and I became so disgusted with SABC TV and e-TV over the post-holiday week, we rented Season 1 of GoT and binge-watched the 10 episodes in 3 days. Not much of a binge I suppose. Anyway, we felt we have to watch all the Series 1-4 to remember what it was all about before watching 5 and 6

Will G R R Martin ever finish writing novel #6? Will he die before even starting the final and 7th volume? How old will all the original GoT stars be by then? Don't tell me if they are all dead by series 5....

Wheel of Time saga went to 15 volumes. The creator died and the last two or three were worked up from the creators notes. Jordan said he had already written the last scene sometime when he was in about vol. 9.

At about that time I sent a fan note to Martin and he actually answered and we exchanged a few letters. I bought directly from him some signed copies of his books that were out of print at that time. In passing I told him I was sick of Jordan's Wheel of Time in that it each single book had morphed into 800+ pages that covered just 24 hours. and I was bored with waiting for a year for the next installment. He told me Game of Thrones was definitely gonna be only three books. (At that time only the first was released) I read the first two, and then dropped it.

Never watched the video version. My son has watched it all. He tells me any character with a name will be killed off.

Makes sense.  If they don't know your name they can't kill you off, since they wouldn't know what to put on the tombstone.

I just suffered through the Red Wedding this morning before going to bed - brutal, but there is comfort in fiction that reminds us that heroes sometimes suffer unimaginable ends, and that being a hero is no guarantee of a happy ending.

Or as F. Scott once said, 'show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy.'


I'm terrifically impressed with GOT; I scoffed at all the fandom when the show first aired, couldn't watch it anyway didn't have HBO - but while I do have to look away from the screen for a lot of the violence and I had to fast forward some of the torture scenes, I find the production values and acting to be quite excellent, especially my favorite character, Tyrion Lannister. About those Lannisters - it's nice to finally find a family more twisted and dysfunctional than my own.

I thought about not including High Plains Drifter as you said, Marshall Jim Duncan was killed and reincarnated. But throughout the film he has no name until the end when the grave is finally being marked. Even then, no one speaks it.

I don't remember if there was a similar "conclusion" in Pale Rider? He's only referred to as "Preacher" and then "You".

One thing I don't expect to see with only a six episode final season for such a sweeping saga is a lot of "filler"; at least so far the story lines are moving along smartly...
