A man has been killed by a crocodile while trying to cross a river near the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, police say.
The 47-year-old man was wading across Cahills Crossing, a causeway across the East Alligator River, with two women when he disappeared under the water about 4pm on Thursday.
The women raised the alarm and police and park rangers launched several boats to search for the man. His body was found about two kilometres downstream about 7pm.
Superintendent Warren Jackson, from Northern Territory Police, said a 3.3-metre crocodile was found close to the man's body. That crocodile was shot and killed, and its body will be recovered on Friday.
The East Alligator River at Cahills Crossing is infested with saltwater crocodiles, and signs have been erected at the spot warning people not to enter the water.
Superintendent Jackson said the river was flowing quickly when the trio entered the water.

Kakadu National Park services need to post signs "Please Don't Feed The Crocodiles."

It's shameful to kill the crocodile for simply acting on instinct; those folks were idiotic to ignore the warning signs.

Well, that would have been a good enough clue for me...The East Alligator River at Cahills Crossing is infested with saltwater crocodiles, and signs have been erected at the spot warning people not to enter the water.
I see a sign that says "water is infested with saltwater crocodiles"; I don't go for a swim...
But hey, that's just me...

The fact is he was eaten by a crocodile, not an alligator, so the warning "Alligator River" is clearly inadequate and defective. Some cartographer is going to get sued.

This whole thing could have been avoided if they had painted the crocodiles a bright safety yellow...

Not only that, but how do they know it was THAT crocodile that took him off? Could have been attempting crocodile pulmonary resuscitation. My grandfather was a famously dedicated swimmer. When he finished his education in Denmark he swam in the Oresund whenever he could so when he was in Ethiopia he would just hand off the rifle to someone else and say, "If you see a crocodile, shoot it" and then dive in for his daily swim. In the end he was cut down at the age of 98 by a life of reckless and riotous living.

I agree, the croc was just being a croc doing what crocs do; how can you blame him for taking the meal placed right in front of him?
