Thank you, Guin. It is also a temporary measure pending revisions to immigration checks (that funny acronym thingie. what is it?). It certainly should not be stopping people already issued green cards and visas from entering the country. It also includes provision for exceptions such as those who've worked for the US (translators).

My granddaughter tells me that it (ETA: the opposition to the EO) is less about facts and more about ethics.

Talk about unintended consequences. The travel ban is about to spur an unprecedented flight of highly skilled labour and the corporations that employ it north of the border:
Canada’s embrace of immigrants and refugees in the face of U.S. travel restrictions may result in good karma for Canadian business. Foreign talent is now more likely to seek Canadian jobs, say tech executives. And international corporations, too, are considering moves north of the border, by opening or expanding Canadian operations.

“I’ve been receiving calls from individuals who had the option of taking up employment in Canada or the U.S. and are now thinking that maybe they should take the Canadian job,” said Peter Rekai, a Toronto-based corporate immigration lawyer.

Canada’s technology industry was quick to capitalize on that sentiment. In an open letter published on Sunday, it called on Ottawa to “institute an immediate and targeted visa” offering temporary residency in Canada to those displaced by U.S. president Donald Trump’s temporary ban on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The message was signed by industry leaders such as Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke and Wealthsimple CEO Michael Katchen.

Such display of openness, coupled with the Trudeau government’s message that refugees and immigrants are welcome in Canada, is likely to help the tech industry recruit the best and brightest.

“If Canada is open to the best tech talent from countries that are restricted from other jurisdictions, including the U.S., then Canada will get that talent,” said Karen Greve Young, vice-president of partnerships at MaRS Discovery District, a Toronto-based tech incubator.

But it isn’t just highly skilled professionals who have their eyes on Canada. International corporations have been mulling opening or growing offices in Canada ever since Trump’s election in November, said Rekai.

Corporate talk about using Canada as a base for international employees who might face visa challenges in the U.S. is “something that comes up whenever the Americans tighten rules or limit the number of skilled people that they bring in,” he added.

Back in 2009, when rumours swirled about upcoming restrictions to the coveted U.S. H1B work visa program, Microsoft quietly opened a 70,000-sq.-foot centre near Vancouver, where it “parked” foreign workers whose U.S. immigration process had stalled, according to a report in Maclean’s magazine.

Companies in sectors like information technology and medical research are now contemplating similar moves, according to Rekai. This time, however, “I’m not so sure that they’ll be parking them,” he said, adding that executives are increasingly thinking of Canada as a permanent home for their international workforce.

If I still had my house, I'd fill it with Syrian refugees. Only problem is that they'd be reviled by most of the inhabitants of that redneck racist cowboy town, where most people think Trump's election was divinely ordained.

So it's just as well I got sick & lost it.

Further on this meme.... does it not also show that there is no "Muslim" ban? Some people want to have it both ways; all Muslims are banned and we'll prove it by posting something showing that all Muslims are not banned. Talk about "alternative facts".

I'd prefer an EO that ordered an all-out assault on visa over-stayers, from every country, and shipped them back to where they came from

Gen'l, are you still wondering just what the criteria was for these numbers? Did you read the heading? The Orlando Nightclub shooting was in 2016. Yes it is a muslim ban on countries not doing business with the USofA's president's affiliated companies. If the ban blocks the Syrian Christians the president was so concerned about (see http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/poli ... /97175800/) well, that is collateral damage, just the cost of not doing business with Trump Enterprises.

I call it a muslim ban because that is what our president called it. He instructed his staff to find a legal way to ban muslims. They produced the document that has thrown out the baby with the bathwater, but the objective was muslims and bathwater and for that it works.

So how is it that THE most populous Muslim nation (by numbers not percentages) is not on the list. In fact the top 5 are not on the list.
They are
Indonesia has 204million Muslims and not on the list.
Pakistan with 178million Muslims is not on the list.
India with 172million Muslims is not on the list.
Bangladesh with 145million Muslims is not on the list.
Nigeria with 93million Muslims is not on the list.

Coming in at number 6 with 74million Muslims is Iran who is on the list.
Number 10, Sudan with 39million Muslims is also on the list.
Number 12 is Iraq with 31million Muslims is also on the list.
The rest on the list are:
Number 17 Yemen (24million),
Number 19 Syria (20million),
Number 28 Somalia (9million)
Number 36 Libya (6million).

These and more numbers can be found here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_by_country

It's a temporary moratorium (90 days IIRC) until a process can be put in place.

Yes, I am sorry that some people (less than 200 from what I heard) were inconvenienced. But over 1/4million foriegn nationals did come into the USA over the weekend without any hassles. But of course they don't make headlines nor good copy.

There is a process in place. It starts with UN Refugee data collection and then moves to USA agency review. That review takes a minimum of two years. I have heard nothing from the president's staff about where the process can be improved. Our president says he wants to allow in people who share his view of what American values are--you know like, yes torture works, and like, it is a tough world and you gotta be tough. You can make your own list.

In the beginning I thought Kellyanne did a great job defending and interpreting Trump. Unfortunately, it seems that when people are around Trump long enough, they start acting like him.

And this morning he Tweeted, "Iran is playing with fire — they don't appreciate how 'kind' President Obama was to them. Not me."

This the exact type of thing we all feared would happen. Welcome to Trump's world. We're all aboard the Trumpoline, like it or not...
