The Conway feet on the couch thing isn't "fake news" because it actually happened...
A better description might be "non-news" because it's relatively speaking trivial and unimportant, and therefore not particularly newsworthy, even though it did happen...
"Fake news" is not going to be very useful as a descriptive concept if its definition is extended to include the reporting of anything of low newsworthiness value...
The phrase was coined to describe a specific phenomena involving the deliberate dissemination of falsehoods presented in a way to deceive people into believing that they are facts...
I think it's useful to have a phrase that specifically describes that, because it's a real problem that people need to aware of...
This looks like a pretty good definition to me:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/fake-news.htmlFake news, or hoax news, refers to false information or propaganda published under the guise of being authentic news. Fake news websites and channels push their fake news content in an attempt to mislead consumers of the content and spread misinformation via social networks and word-of-mouth.
Trump has tried to debase the meaning of the expression by using it to refer to any news story that is critical of him. I think we ought to preserve the narrow definition, and not extend it to cover other things.
