Jerry Brown travels to Washington to get a ‘lay of the land’ in Trump era

By Katy Murphy | kmurphy@bayareanewsgroup.com |

PUBLISHED: March 20, 2017 at 10:12 am | UPDATED: March 20, 2017 at 4:30 pm

Gov. Jerry Brown pays a visit to Washington, D.C., this week — his first trip to the nation’s capital since President Donald Trump took office.

“This is a chance to get a lay of the land in rapidly changing times,” said his press secretary, Evan Westrup.

The governor’s office gave few details of his four-day itinerary other than attending a board of directors meeting of the nonprofit Nuclear Threat Initiative, which Brown joined this year. Westrup said he would release more information at the end of each day.

The trip comes as California and Washington clash over everything from climate change to immigration. Last week, Trump — who previously called California “out of control” — released a budget blueprint proposing that Congress slash the Environmental Protection Agency by nearly a third, along with other deep cuts to research, foreign diplomacy and federal programs to support the arts.

Still, Brown has expressed some optimism that the state could work with Trump on infrastructure improvements — one possible area of common ground.

The governor is scheduled to return to California on Thursday

Perhaps it is time that the blue states keep some of their tax revenue, to benefit the citizens who paid it. Rather than turning it over to the federal government, where so much of it is funneled to the red states.

https://newrepublic.com/article/140948/ ... ed-america
What I mean is that it’s time for blue states and cities to effectively abandon the American national enterprise, as it is currently constituted. Call it the New Federalism. Or Virtual Secession. Or Conscious Uncoupling—though that’s already been used. Or maybe Bluexit.

Truth is, you red states just haven’t been pulling your weight. Not for, well, forever. Red states are nearly twice as dependent on the federal government as blue states. Of the twelve states that received the least federal aid in return for each tax dollar they contribute to the U.S. Treasury, ten of them voted for Hillary Clinton—and the other two were Michigan and Wisconsin, your newest recruits. By the same count, 20 of the 26 states most dependent on federal aid went to Trump.

Take Mississippi (please!), famous for being 49th or 50th in just about everything that matters. When it comes to sucking at the federal teat, the Magnolia State is the undisputed champ. More than 40 percent of Mississippi’s state revenue comes from federal funding; one-third of its GDP comes from federal spending; for every dollar it pays out in federal taxes, it takes in $4.70 in federal aid; one in five residents are on food stamps—all national highs. You people—your phrase, not mine—liked to bash Obama for turning America into what you derisively referred to as “Food Stamp Nation.” In reality, it’s more like Food Stamp Red America—something your Trump-loving congressmen will discover if and when they fulfill their vow to gut the program.

Maybe it's time to start talking secession? We all know which part of the divided nation would be "great" again.

You know, with the GOP so determined to trash any kind of national healthcare system, I am in favor of pulling New Jersey out of that racket altogether and making the state a single-payer system as an escape hatch from whatever trainwreck Paul Ryan brings to the floor. It's an issue in our gubernatorial primaries -- John Wisniewski is making NJ single-payer a significant part of his platform. Even if he doesn't win the primary, if he can pull Phil Murphy into adopting it as well, we might have a fighting chance.
GAH!

That's what the article is about. Worth a read.

"Tin cup" ?? We pay 40 BILLION dollars more a year, on average, than we get back from the federal government.

It is the federal government and the Red States who are the beggars. Without our support the rest of youse would be in the shitter.

I've been posting about this here and at our predecessor sites for > 10 years now:

Cal Exit.........http://www.yescalifornia.org/
The 2019 #Calexit Independence Referendum

In the Spring of 2019, Californians will go to the polls in a historic vote to decide by referendum if California should exit the Union, a #Calexit vote.

You will have this historic opportunity because the Yes California Independence Campaign will qualify a citizen’s initiative for the 2018 ballot that if passed would call for a special election for Californians to vote for or against the independence of California from the United States.

This is a very important question. It is the responsibility of this campaign to explain what a yes vote will mean for you, your family, your community, our state, our country, and our world. We have designed this website to answer many of these questions and look to you to ask more.

"As the sixth largest economy in the world, California is more economically powerful than France and has a population larger than Poland. Point by point, California compares and competes with countries, not just the 49 other states.”

In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children.

Although charity is part of our culture, when you consider that California’s infrastructure is falling apart, our public schools are ranked among the worst in the entire country, we have the highest number of homeless persons living without shelter and other basic necessities, poverty rates remain high, income inequality continues to expand, and we must often borrow money from the future to provide services for today, now is not the time for charity.

However, this independence referendum is about more than California subsidizing other states of this country. It is about the right to self-determination and the concept of voluntary association, both of which are supported by constitutional and international law.

It is about California taking its place in the world, standing as an equal among nations. We believe in two fundamental truths: (1) California exerts a positive influence on the rest of the world, and (2) California could do more good as an independent country than it is able to do as just a U.S. state.

In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the international community with their “Brexit” vote. Our “Calexit” referendum is about California joining the international community. You have a big decision to make.

Yes California is here to help.
Yes, we all know that how well that idea worked out for the Confederacy during the War Between The States!

Not a fan of either, but isn't it Brown's job to try to figure out how to work with whoever is president.

It is Brown's job to govern California not kiss ass to a deranged Republican psychopath nor to deny reality.
