If I thought HTFD was a rubbish movie, would I like this one?

I looked this movie up and it has a 3.5/4 rating from Roger Ebert and a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But on Netflix it has only 1 & 1/4 stars!

Is that because it's intelligent? If so, I will put it in my queue.

I don't know if I'd call it "intelligent" but It's a movie that examines "the human condition". The composition of the scenes could be described as "art house". If you are unwilling or unable to surrender yourself to the story being told both in the abstract and through the dialogue you could very well be/get bored with it. In short if you are only interested in the "what" of it you will be bored. But if you let yourself meditate on the why while letting the visual story wash over you it will be profound.

Sounds like exactly the kind of mental masturbation I most enjoy! So thanks for the recommend, I will try to watch it soon.

I was scrolling through my Netflix and Amazon queues the other day and it became clear that I can never die, as I have too many movies and shows to watch. And that's not even counting the archive at PBS!

Believe it or not, I haven't actually plugged the dialogue in in a search engine to see what the movie is.

But I did look up Dustin Hoffman, scrolled through his credits and figured out what the movie with the same name is. Way too obscure- probably because it's a foreign film. One of the few that have cropped up in this thread.

A film like "Hero" demonstrates how the martial arts genre transcends action and violence and moves into poetry, ballet and philosophy. It is violent only incidentally. What matters is not the manner of death, but the manner of dying: In a society that takes a Zen approach to swordplay and death, one might win by losing. There is an ancient martial arts strategy in which one lures the opponent closer to throw him off balance, and yields to his thrusts in order to mislead him. This strategy works with words as well as swords. One might even defeat an opponent by dying -- not in the act of killing him, but as a move in a larger game.

Every genre has its cadre of moviegoers who think they dislike it. Sometimes a movie comes along that they should see nevertheless. If you've avoided every superhero movie, for example, "Spider-Man 2" is the one to see. If you dislike martial arts even after "Crouching Tiger," then "Hero" may be the right film. Is it better than "Crouching Tiger"? Perhaps not, because the "Rashomon" structure undermines the resonance and even the reality of the emotional relationships. But Zhang Yimou, whose "Raise the Red Lantern" was so beautiful, once again creates a visual poem of extraordinary beauty.

Guess this is one movie I won't go to see, nor sit in my recliner to watch, nor......
I do think a winner or a default winner be chosen and lets get on with it.
