Happy Earth Day!

Post by Guinevere »

From one of the most beautiful and most threatened places I know - my home. Please help it survive. Science matters.

March for Science rallies draw huge crowds around US

Thousands of scientists and supporters descended on Washington and other cities across the country – and the world – on Saturday in a unified demand for evidence-based public policy and increased funding for scientific research.

The massive demonstration in Washington, termed the March for Science, was an intended bipartisan call to stand up for scientific pursuits. But the gathering was ultimately tinged with opposition to the policies of the Trump administration, which many marchers view as increasingly hostile toward the scientific community.

Under grey skies and chilly rain, thousands of people crowded into the National Mall Saturday morning to hear from speakers, who urged policymakers to fund scientific research and pursue efforts to ease and reduce the effects of climate change.

"Today we have a great many lawmakers, not just here, but around the world, deliberately ignoring and actively surpassing science," Bill Nye, one of the United States' highest-profile science educators who is widely known as "the Science Guy," told marchers. "There inclination is misguided, and in no one’s best interest."

Some protesters on the National Mall waved signs embracing science-related puns. One, for example, read "Science cuts make me relatively angry" and featured an image of Albert Einstein – a reference to the famous physicists Theory of Relativity. "Pretty absurd that this march is necessary, another sign read.

I see a lot of references to "huge crowds" in the stories I looked at, but no actual size estimates...

Here are some of the signs:

Happy Earth Day!

Guin, if you were to segment your photo into 10 sections -- left to right -- where do you fit in? I think you're ocean-side and maybe at section nine or ten, recalling a few photos you have posted over the years.

If global warming is to continue -- and it will -- I feel any beachfront property may be in peril within a decade, not a century as some deniers claim.

Good luck... and keep a self-inflating life raft close by.

I was at the Chicago march yesterday, and news reports said there were "over 40,000" participants there.

Here are some of my favorites of the signs I saw:

    • SAVE THE PLANET
OURS IS THE ONLY ONE WITH PIZZA
      FIGHT TRUTH DECAY
YOU KNOW IT'S BAD IF THE NERDS ARE OUTSIDE
      DUMBLEDORE'S ARMY
      STILL RECRUITING
      KEEP THE EARTH CLEAN
      IT'S NOT URANUS
YOU CAN'T REPEAL THE LAWS OF PHYSICS
EXECUTIVE ORDERS DON'T FAZE THEM EITHER
      WHAT DO WE WANT?
      EVIDENCE-BASED SCIENCE!
      WHEN DO WE WANT IT?
      AFTER PEER REVIEW!
      [citation needed]

      TRUMP'S P-VALUE IS >.05
IT'S ALL FUN & GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE LOSES A PLANET
[/b] [picture of the White House with a big red arrow pointing toward it]

      [caption:]
WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO SCIENCE THE SHIT OUT OF THIS!
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

Gee Econo, isn't this the second protest march you've participated in in as many weeks?

You're becoming quite the malcontent... 8-)

Pale Blue Dot... how poignant and thought provoking.

"... Like it or not, for the moment, the earth is where we make our stand..."

For better or worse, we are a captive audience. And the loudest voice is not always the strongest. Sigh!

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
