oldr--are pistol permits routinely rejected in LI; I know in NJ you need a permit for each pistol purchased, but generally you can get the permit unless you have something in your past (such as a violent criminal offense conviction) which would cause a problem.

Carry permits are a different thing altogether (and IMHO, making them difficult to get is good, I don't relish the thought of thousands of Walter Mittys or worse walking around with concealed (or open for that matter) arms. I do have some friends who hunt and have been told that hunters in NY can carry a pistol while they are hunting (presumably to deal with dangerous animals), and one can always "carry" one's pistols to the range, so one can "carry" if they have a need to, but they can't walk around like it's Dodge City.

If you are clean as the driven snow, permits are usually granted. Problem is it's not issued by the state, it winds up being a "county" thing. That is, the permit is issued by the county you live in. Costs and some criteria are county specific.

Just another layer of the government to get in the way.

Rifles are the fed background check only, although even that is probelmatic sometimes, but that was some "playing" of the govs system by some bastard gun dealers. :arg

Bows/crossbows (my personal preference of weapons) require no gov checks (maybe age?).

Actually, in NJ, the local police departments issue the pistol permits. There have been lawsuits when the Chief refuses to issue a permit, and I think now you can get a pistol permit in most (if not all) municipalities unless there is a reason one should not be issued.

Rifles and long guns require only the background check and issuance of a card to buy rifles and long guns (actually, this is required even for air rifle BB guns and other pellet guns),

local police departments
I think that is what they mean by "county" here in NY as most police are county entities. I doubt if those municipalities who have their own cops issue the permit.
Also, each pistol you own must be declared on the license.
When my cousin died, they knew within a few days he died and got notice to his widow that she had to surrender the pistols. They did not check if she had a license, which she did. She ended having to go down to the precinct and have them transfered to her permit.

Her brothers applied for their permits shortly after he died (april 2016) and just got them april 2017. I believe she is transfering a few to them. Don't knowwhat the Pa permit laws are but my dad is taking one (or two) of the pistols also.

ETA
When carrying the weapons (as in going to/from the range), they must be unloaded with open action and the ammo stored away from the pistols.

Makes sense--if you carry a loaded pistol in your pocket you might well end up going off half-cocked.

The point I was making is that if the lady had a gun and had known how to use it and had used it correctly she would have had a chance to live. Her attacker didn‘t need a gun; he killed her with his bare hands. Some people’s hands are weapons.

The same can be said for Nicole Simpson; she did nothing to protect herself. She owns some of the responsibility for her own death as wall as the man that was with her.

The liberal mind set is that of a victim.
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

So you won't be happy until people living in the safest, most exclusive neighborhoods in America feel they need to have a loaded weapon in hand whilst chatting in their own dooryard on a summer evening?

Fuck that. That's NOT freedom!

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

liberty, I don't think those two situations are comparable. Was there an order of protection against OJ? I don't think so.
But on the situation described here there was.
I would advise anyone who has gotten an OP agains someone they fear for thier life from, to be armed and trained to use any weapon they feel comfortable with.
I know I would.
OP's are rarely a deterant to a psycho and cops cannot be everywhere.

There have been more than a few cases here on LI where psychos ignored the OP where the victims ended up seriously hurt or dead.
