There's a lot of very obvious non-Trump ass kissing...
Again, words, not deeds. The fact that he appeared and voted YES for the MTP was because his leader on high, aka the Trumpanzee, ordered his compliance.

Did you see him kissing Yertle's ring when he walked up to vote? I watched that clip. It was disgusting.

A couple of examples from the text of McCain's speech:

...“We are an important check on the powers of the Executive. Our consent is necessary for the President to appoint jurists and powerful government officials and in many respects to conduct foreign policy. Whether or not we are of the same party, we are not the President’s subordinates. We are his equal!...
Except he voted in lockstep for EVERY SINGLE ONE of the cabinet nominees (he voted no for OMB and USTrade rep - big deal). That's hardly acting as a check or balance. And he voted to remove the 60 vote cloture requirement for Supreme Court nominees. Another opportunity to truly be a check and he failed miserably. The only thing he voted against the Trumpanzee on was the Russia sanctions. Another nothing burger vote.

He is "mavericky" in name only. What he really is is a privileged old white male who continues to vote to protect those interests.

Hmm...

Here's the video of McCain's arrival in the Senate Chamber:

Yes, McConnell is the first one to embrace him, (which would stand to reason, following Senate protocol) but that embrace is followed in very short order by several others, (including a fairly strong bear hug from Chuck Schumer) prior to McCain casting his vote....

And after that, every member of the Senate from both sides of the aisle lined up to greet him...

But ring kissing, no, I'm afraid I don't see that...

So apparently McCain's illness has earned him the right to have no ill spoken of him?

Well, I don't subscribe to that rule for dead people either, much less for living politicians who chose to take their illness back to the Senate and vote for proceeding with a legislative process that's been underhanded and anti-democratic from the start. He could have used his moment to give that same speech and vote against the continuation of this corrupt process, but he didn't.

He's a selfish prick and it makes me ill knowing that my tax dollars will subsidize his excellent medical care while so many millions are going to lose theirs, either from a successful vote on a GOP repeal, or from their plan B to destroy the ACA by every other means possible.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Does that mean that the Dems in the Senate also failed to be a "check" on Executive power when they followed Senator Slime and opened this door by eliminating the 60 vote cloture requirement on all other judicial nominees and cabinet appointees?

Not the point. You're lionizing McCain for his comments today and I'm pointing out that he had multiple chances in the last six months to do exactly what he is criticizing others for not doing. Except, oh, gee, he didn't do it either.

Oh, and hey, there was another vote tonight - on repeal and replace -- and guess how John McCan voted?

Guess.

9 Republicans opposed their party. Largest defection yet.

Was McCain part of that group??

First two guesses don't count .....

All I'm saying is that I'll reserve any judgement I might have of McCain until I see what he will support in an actual new health care bill. To condemn him for today's speech is to assume he didn't mean a word he said.

And I'm saying John McCain's history is to talk the talk and not walk the walk. So we will see what happens next. So far, he looks like the flaming hypocrite he is. Ironic, no, since his own hypocrisy folds in so nicely with that of his leader (the one who repeatedly called him a loser for getting shot down and captured).

My part in this discussion is based on his speech today and the reaction to it by a couple or one of our Plan B membership. I don't believe that McCain voted today because Trump told him to. I think he actually wants to move forward. To me, he doesn't even appear to be a fan of Trump.

We'll see...

I completely disagree on that...

It's not a "nothing burger" when Republican Senators vote overwhelmingly to tie the hands of a so-called Republican President regarding his ability to deal with Russia...

On the contrary; that is without precedent...it's a half-pound mushroom and swiss with bacon burger...

And I'm happy to report that buried in all the other news today, the House has followed suit, with a 419-3 vote... :ok

The GOP Health Plan-or-If You're Not Wealthy You be Screwed

Post by RayThom »

McCain was eloquently self-serving. He sounded so sincere while giving a big fuck you to all those dependent on a basic health care plan that provides much, much less than the benefits he enjoys. Here's a man so close to death yet not a whit of empathy for those less fortunate traveling on the same road. Kissing up to Lord Dampnut with a total disregard for so much of his constituent base.

As if his choice of Sarah Palin wasn't bad enough, and now it's his choice to scuttle Obamacare. What a horrible legacy he leaves as he, himself, slowly fades into eternal darkness. Sad.

Senator McCain... you are dead to me. Hurry, John, you're almost there.

From Paul Krugman's blog:
  • The important thing to realize is WHY the Senate is doing this — rushing to pass legislation that will have a vast impact on American lives, the economy, and more without a single hearing, without time for a proper analysis of the bill, and with crucial votes taken on behalf of legislation yet to be determined. It’s not some arbitrary failure of procedure: it’s a coverup.

The fact is that Republicans have no good ideas on health; everything they want to do will make huge numbers of people worse off, to the benefit of a wealthy few. And they know this. They know that the campaign against Obamacare was based on lies from the beginning, that all their complaints about things like high deductibles were hypocritical. They know that what they’re about to do is terrible. But they’re trying to do it anyway — and the only way they have a chance is by breaking every rule of good governance, by making the process so rushed and secretive that nobody has a chance to say “Wait a minute– what are we doing?”

At a deep level McConnell’s determination to pass a health bill by breaking all norms is quite similar to Trump’s determination to shut down an investigation into his own corruption and possible collusion. Both men are trying to cover up what they know would outrage voters if they knew about it, and they don’t care what rules get broken along the way.

And the Senators who caved on health today are pretty much the same people who are enabling Trump’s abuse of his office. The moral rot in the Republican party runs wide as well as deep. All we need to save America is a few good men — but apparently all we have are two decent women. And that’s not enough.
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

As long as LJ and Longrun make excuses for the moral rot it will continue.

I want to thank you for posting that Econo...

I've felt compelled to agree with so many people that I don't generally agree with lately, (Jim Wrong, Gene Robinson, etc.) it's refreshing to be able to say that Krugman remains the same turd-brained, know-nothing, waste of space he's always been, and I feel absolutely no compulsion to agree with him...

Good to know there are still some things one can count on... :ok

What a perfectly idiotic comparison he makes...

Just what I'd expect from that mediocre hack...

Every time I see something posted written by that blindly ideological buffoon, I feel like posting something written by Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter just to balance out the value-content...

Exactly a nothing burger because he was part of an "overwhelming" 97-2 (Rand Paul and Bernie were the two holdouts) vote majority. It took no courage or mavericky gumption to be a part of that majority.

Well, I couldn't disagree more...

It certainly took political courage to defy a President of your own party on such a critical matter...(a critical matter he is obviously obsessed with)

Just because a whole lot of people exhibited that courage doesn't diminish it...

And it also clearly makes the statement that the pro-Putin policy of Donald Trump is NOT the policy of the Congressional Republican Party, and they will stand up against it, in a substantive way...

I hope this becomes the beginning of a trend...
