My mom and her side of the family -- God fearing Irish Catholics, some daily Mass attendees -- used to call light skinned Negroes "High Yellow." My family had disparaging names for almost every ethnic group except for the Irish, of course.

In mom's later years I did finally convince her that she needed to be more charitable to those who were different and she did her best to change. And then she died.
