More pandering to the ill informed...

Post by Gob »

A local council in England has decided to change the name of the reflective road markings known as 'cat's eyes' in favour of 'road studs' after confused tourists and worried children thought real animals parts were used on British highways.

The initial confusion was caused after signs saying 'warning cats eyes removed' was taken literally by tourists and young children.

'Road stud' warnings have now replaced the traditional signs after Suffolk County Council approved the change.

After the 'cat's eyes' sign sparked so much confusion, Suffolk County Council will now only to refer to them by their new name in signage.

The move has been met with anger from former deputy council leader Christopher Hudson, who claimed the move will only add to confusion.

So they will replace cat eyes with road studs. Reminds me of that fine old traditional song "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?"

I've never heard either expression.

I've heard of "Botts' dots", though, which sound like much the same thing.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

People are getting stupidier than evier to be offended by innocent signage.

I thought it was Bill Clinton who was a roads stud?
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

I've known them as 'cat's eyes' ever since I was a kid.

Nice one MGM. Bill Clinton never made eyes at that cat, Miss Mewlinsky.

Never heard the term used in the sense meant in the OP, but I remember this sort of "cats eyes" (marbles) from long, long ago, when I was a kid:

Yeah. Same here.

P.S. If the "cats eyes" had been *REMOVED* how could the council even expect a child or a tourist unfamiliar with the term to figure out from the context WTF that sign meant (especially if they saw it during the day)? I don't think the problem was that people were offended so much as bewildered.

Speaking of which, why don't we see any of these on the popular kitchen counters of the day?

I was very confused the first time I went to the U.K. and saw many signs marking "zebra crossings", none of which appeared to be in the vicinity of a zoo.

I've never heard the term applied to reflectors in the road, but when I was a kid we call the red (sometimes amber) reflectors on the backs of bicycles "cats eyes".

That's actually the brand-name of a major manufacturer of reflectors and other products designed for night-time visibility for bicycle use.
