Over whom, Omar Sharif or Al Martino?

I guess actually Maurice Jarre's instrumental Lara's Theme. I'm aware of the popular song version but not sure I've ever heard/seen Martino's cover of it.

I was 16 or 17 when my mother gave me Dr. Zhivago; I wrinkled my nose when the wrapping paper came off, 'what's this?' - but fell instantly and deeply in love at first viewing. One of the great epics of all time.

I haven't watched it in a very long time, since I ditched my VHS collection in '02. Time to pick up a digital version!

eta: And yes, Omar was hot hot hot and so damned noble!

Lara's Theme is beautiful. I have a friend who years ago worked in a music store, who when trying to sell a piano or organ to women who would have been in their teens to thirties when Doctor Zhivago came out, would always play Lara's Theme to demonstrate it. Pretty much always made the sale.

OK, next movie quote:

Jesus, I mean, you guys do nothing but complain about how you can't stand it in this place here and you don't have the guts just to walk out? What do you think you are, for Chrissake, crazy or somethin'? Well you're not! You're not! You're no crazier than the average asshole out walkin' around on the streets and that's it.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I think that has to be a record for how quickly a quote was identified after being posted.

You ever take biology in school, soldier?

Yes, Sergeant-Major.

How do worms copulate?

They don't, Sergeant-Major; they use asexual reproduction.

Mmmm-hmmmm! Interesting concept! Tell me, [ ] -- any idea who first came up with that notion: reproducing without sex?

Your wife, Sergeant-Major?

No, but good guess.

This movie flew under the radar a bit - but it's still a really good film. Another hint: it doesn't involve a whole lot of in the field action scenes . . . if any. (It's been many years since I last watched it.)

eta: It was released around the same time as Good Morning Vietnam.

And along with The Great Santini, it's one of the best depictions of lifers in the military and the pressures they are under.

One of my favorite quotes is (paraphrasing), no one is more against war than the people who have to fight it.
