Trump Approval Rating Is Below 40 Percent in Three States That Propelled Him to Presidency

In what could mark the first clear signs that support for President Donald Trump is dropping in the Rust Belt battleground, a new set of polls shows people in three key states aren’t so fond of the commander in chief. Support for Trump stands at below 40 percent in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, according to recent NBC News/Marist polls. In all three states more than 60 percent of voters said Trump’s conduct as president embarrassed them, compared to 25 percent who say it has made them proud.

Perhaps even more significant is that Democrats enjoy clear advantages when voters are asked who they want to control Congress after the 2018 midterm elections. In Michigan, almost half—48 percent—of voters say they would prefer a Democratically controlled Congress, compared to 35 percent who want it to stay in Republican hands. In Pennsylvania, 47 percent want Democrats to control Congress, compared to 37 percent who favor Republicans while in Wiscosin the Democratic advantage is 46 percent-38 percent.[Now let's see if the Democrats can nominate and turn out to vote for candidates that can take advantage of this...]

The three states in question are seen as particularly significant because they were key to Trump’s victory as he became the first Republican to win all three of them since 1980s. But now the mood seems to be shifting. In Wisconsin, only 34 percent of voters approve of Trump’s job performance, compared to 36 percent in Michigan and 35 percent in Pennsylvania. The polls were conducted Aug. 13-17 and some cautioned that the extent of the president’s unpopularity could be exaggerated due to his much-criticized response to the violence that descended on Charlottesville on Aug. 12.

I have to say that this number really has me flummoxed:
more than 60 percent of voters said Trump’s conduct as president embarrassed them, compared to 25 percent who say it has made them proud.
While I am hugely embarrassed by Trump's conduct as President, I can at least understand the mentality of a person who in answering that question decides, "well, obviously I'm not 'proud' of Trump's behavior, but since I don't consider the way Trump behaves to be a reflection on me personally, I don't feel compelled to be 'embarrassed' by it either..."

And therefore chose "neither" ...

But "proud"?

PROUD???

:shrug :loon :shrug :loon :shrug :loon

How can anyone, (even someone who is generally supportive of Trump) look at the totality of his conduct over the past seven months and say, "Yes sir, that really makes me proud. I so hope he keeps on acting exactly the way he has been"...

I strongly advise anyone who "thinks" that way to take a good look at that clip of Brooke Baldwin going over all the things Trump has done in just the past month...

And then consider the fact that list only covers one month out of the past seven...

That 25% saying they are "proud" of the way Trump has conducted himself must be either completely ignorant of how he has been conducting himself, or deeply in denial about what that sort of conduct represents...

It sure as hell ain't nothin' to be "proud" of...

Michigan is currently gerrymandered to hell and even though there are far more democratic votes the vast majority of seats go to republicans. There is currently a petition drive underway to fix the redistricting process but that won't happen until after 2020
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Here's the "Gerried" map for my voting region. By all accounts a Republican paradise.

That is a seriously fucked up district map, Ray. Problem is, though, that the neighboring districts that would be the most natural geographic fit for redistricting (6 and 16) are also fairly solidly Republican. To get a balance that more accurately reflects the region, you'd have to reconfigure pretty much all of Eastern PA, carving out city wards from Philly and Chester to combine with the suburban counties. Not that that's a bad idea, but as you know the municipal boundaries are often very real social boundaries as well. That said, I see that neighboring PA-13 (suburban Montgomery County with a little Philly) has swung from a reliably R district to a D+15, although that district is also hardly a compact geographical unit itself.

On the "proud" piece - the delusions are ridiculous - but then the Trumpanzee is their God. I was listening to someone on NPR (can't recall who -- I'm on vacation) being interviewed about all of the "accomplishments" of the administration. Clearly on serious drugs, scrambling hard to find something positive to say.

About 5,000 carrot-coloured ecstasy tablets in the shape of Donald Trump's head have been seized by German police in the north-western city of Osnabruck.

Image

The drugs were confiscated over the weekend, police say, and an Austrian father and son have been arrested.

It's thought the drugs would have been sold on the internet under the slogan "Trump makes partying great again".

Ecstasy pills can sometimes kill drug takers but more commonly induce nausea, panic, paranoia and agitation.

Experts in the UK have warned the drug is getting stronger, leading to a rise in the number of people going to hospital for treatment for mental and behavioural issues.

What a shit show Trump's rally was - he's incapable of sustaining a modicum of decorum for more than the length of a TelePrompTer speech.

The Trump supporters (like my brother) have no trouble with cognitive dissonance. It is something of a comfort to know my brother is now under the regular care of a psychiatrist. The Guardian interviewed people at the Phoenix rally. One young lady said she still supported Trump. She voted for him because she could not vote for a person who was under FBI investigation. She managed to say both things with no awareness of the contradiction. Or the contradiction that the POTUS said there that he was ready to shut the federal government down if Congress did not give him the money to build the wall. No contradiction that the great negotiator in Phoenix said he can't get the NAFTA agreement modified and the American taxpayer, not Mexico, must pay for the wall.

Here, 50 miles North, I hear the ghost of the Sage of Baltimore laughing uproariously.
