On Twitter, Trump attacks mayor of San Juan for ‘poor leadership’ amid deepening crisis

BRANCHBURG, N.J. — President Trump on Saturday accused the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, of demonstrating “poor leadership” amid the deepening crisis on the island that was devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Trump launched his personal attack on Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz via a morning tweetstorm from his golf resort at Bedminster, N.J., where he is spending the weekend. Cruz on Friday had criticized the Trump administration's response to the hurricane, saying, “I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying.”

In a series of tweets, Trump suggested that the mayor was being manipulated by Democrats to “be nasty to Trump,” and he called on Cruz to have her local officials do more to help the recovery.

4:29 AM - Sep 30, 2017
Trump, who is scheduled to visit Puerto Rico and possibly the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday, has come under increasing criticism for his administration's response to Maria. For days after the storm, Trump and his top aides were largely silent as residents on the island struggled for food and water amid widespread power outages.

The White House said Trump will make calls to several Puerto Rico officials, including Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, on Saturday afternoon.

In her own tweet, Cruz called on her compatriots to focus on "saving lives" and urged them not to be "distracted by anything else."

Since coming under criticism, the president has lashed out on social media. He blamed the island’s financial woes and ailing infrastructure for the difficult recovery process. He also declared that efforts to provide food, water and medical care were “doing well.”

In his tweets Saturday, Trump praised the military and first responders for “an amazing job.”

But the president also lashed out at “fake news” television networks, which he accused of criticizing federal relief workers as a way to punish him politically.

Fake News CNN and NBC are going out of their way to disparage our great First Responders [that charge is 100% fabricated horseshit. I have not seen one single reporter or pundit attack the FRs involved. I'd be amazed if there are any.]in this as a way to "get Trump." Not fair to FR or effort!

I watched Mayor Cruz in an extensive interview with Anderson Cooper last night, and I can tell you that the idea that she is motivated by some sort of political scheme involving trying to hurt Il Boobce, is beyond outrageous; a complete fantasy...

She is clearly 100% focused on the dangers facing her people. That came through with her every word.

This is The Narcissist-In-Chief, yet again projecting his own self-absorbed empathy-free way of perceiving reality on to somebody else. If he were in her position, it would be all about political games. Trump can't even comprehend the mindset of a person like Cruz, who is motivated by a sincere and genuine concern for the welfare of her people.

That's not a motivational concept that he has any acquaintance with or understanding of.

Her people and OUR people, a concept that clearly is beyond the so-called president.

I highly recommend following CBS News reporter David Begnaud on twitter and/or Facebook. He is on the ground traveling in PR and reporting on the actual conditions, talking to local leaders, and seeing the level of response that is happening, especially beyond San Juan. He was in Aguadilla earlier this week and his live reporting brought me to tears.

And of course not satisfied with attacking the mayor, in the tweets I posted in the OP you can also see him doing his vile dog whistle thing to the racists and xenophobes in his base by implying some sort of laziness on the part of those latino Puerto Ricans, who in his view are just sitting around waiting for everything to be done for them, with no concern at all for their own community...

I don't know what the level of volunteer participation in the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico is right now, but I can easily see why it might not be as high as it was in Texas or Florida, and the reasons have nothing to do with some sort of ethnic or cultural character flaw on the part of the Puerto Rican people...

The destruction in Texas and Florida, bad as it has been, did not even begin to approach what befell Puerto Rico. What happened in Puerto Rico was a 100% devastation event, wiping out the electrical grid, all communications and the water system on an island wide basis. There are no significant areas in Puerto Rico that were not affected in this way.

If all of your efforts and energy have to be focused on obtaining food, water, shelter and medical aid for your own family, you're not likely to have a whole lot of free time available to line up to help others, no matter how much you might want to do so.

On top of that in order to have any kind of large scale volunteer effort, you have to have a communication system in place to tell people who want to help where they should show up, what they should bring, etc...

In Puerto Rico, you have no phone service, no internet, and no electricity for television or radio...

How exactly are volunteer efforts supposed to be organized? :shrug

So in summary, Donald Trump views a major disaster that has struck 3.5 million American citizens (and it's worth reminding the white supremacists on the Trump Train that Puerto Ricans are American citizens...if we don't re-build Puerto Rico, they could all move here :o ...) as an oportunity to throw racist red meat to his knuckle dragging followers, and whine about how he's the real victim...

Once again, appalling but not surprising...

David Begnaud specifically addresses that exact accusation in his posts this morning.

One example: one family has rice, another family water, a third family a working stove. They all come together to cook and share the rice so they all have food.

Also, check any of the PR-recovery centered FB groups and you will see similar cooperation, people better off trying to help those in worse conditions and driving across the country to help. The so-called president couldn't be more wrong. He is a miserable pile of stink.

Serious question. Trump keeps calling news organizations such as CNN and NBC 'fake news.' Obviously a commercial enterprise such as these depends on the trust of their viewers / readers / consumers, and an accusation of falsity from the POTUS, especially when repeated again and again, must be a severe constraint on their ability to do business. Is there a point at which the organization(s) could sue the fucker for libel?

There is an entire class of law subsumed under 'commercial torts' . No, that is too restricted. Better IMNSHO, regard it as a separate universe.

Justice is blind, and sometimes just as weird as our POTUS.

Well, it's about time. Lord Dampnut is finally addressing the problems in Puerto Rico with his latest White House release. He apologized for his slow response. He originally thought that Puerto Rico was merely a labor pool for his Mar-a-Lago landscape and maid services.

Trump launches new attack on Puerto Rico ‘ingrates’

Donald Trump continued to inflame a controversy over his administration’s slow response to a humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, calling local officials pleading for help in the devastated US territory “ingrates” from the plush surroundings of his New Jersey golf club.

In a weekend Twitter barrage the US president branded media reports of people struggling to obtain food and water more than a week after Hurricane Maria “fake news” and lashed out at critics in Puerto Rico.

“We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico. Outside of the Fake News or politically motivated ingrates, people are now starting to recognize the amazing work that has been done by [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] and our great Military,” the president tweeted on Sunday.

Our so-called President, Consoler-In-Chief, Las Vegas:
"The mass murder that took place on Sunday night fills America's heart with grief," Trump said in a somber, scripted address. "America is truly a nation in mourning."

Those "whose final act was to sacrifice themselves for those they loved should inspire all of us to show more love every day for the people who grace our lives," the president said, highlighting stories of law enforcement officials, including some who attended the musical festival off-duty, who risked their lives to help others during the shooting.

"When...the worst of humanity strikes, and strike it did, the best of humanity responds," he said.
Our so-called President, Consoler-In-Chief, Puerto Rico:
"I hate to tell you Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack," Trump said with a grin. "Because we've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that's fine, we've saved a lot of lives."

“Every death is a horror. But if you look at a real catastrophe, like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died, and you look at what happened here,” Trump said at a briefing in San Juan with Puerto Rican officials, Cabinet members and military brass.

“What is your death count as of this moment? Seventeen? Sixteen people certified, 16 people versus in the thousands.”
I'm seeing a significant difference...

I think these two excerpts show Trump acting as he should when someone else prepares his statement and he stays on-script (his remarks re: the Las Vegas Massacre) as opposed to when he slips the leash and starts speaking off the cuff (his inexcusable comments that there weren't enough dead in PR to justify the cost of an all-out response).

And then he said in Las Vegas

[quote/]We shouldn't be discouraged that only 50 people died (wait it's up to 59 now? good) because I feel the death of every American on American soil. These were good Americans all who were celebrating the best in us, and tonight I know they are standing in heaven and applauding me for the way I am handling this. Yes, all of heaven is applauding me.

This is not like Puerto Rico where those traitorous bastards are complaining about a baker's dozen or so of people being killed by god's divine wind and accusing me of ignoring them. They are Americans only on paper, who ask only for what "their" country can do for them, and who cannot accept a tossed roll of Bounty graciously. Yes, god treated them accordingly and destroyed their harbors and airfields so they couldn't come here as quickly. Today we mourn the real Americans, tomorrow we fight to keep the fake Americans out of our contry, carrying out the will of god with the leadership of god's anointed president.

God blesses me, and I will continue to bless the real Americans. [/quote]

Here's somebody talking like a real President is supposed to, (as opposed to that faux version currently occupying the Oval Office:)
Puerto Rico: Paul Ryan says US committed "for the long haul"

CNN)House Speaker Paul Ryan on Friday promised additional funding for Puerto Rico's long-term rebuilding and said the United States was committed to the island for the "long haul."

Ryan surveyed storm-ravaged parts of the island from a helicopter one day after the US House of Representatives approved a $36.5 billion disaster aid package for victims in Puerto Rico as well as resources for those in Texas, Florida and the US Virgin Islands still recovering from Hurricanes Maria, Irma and Harvey.

"This isn't the last aid package," Ryan told reporters in San Juan.

"This is the second in more to come. ... When we get that final analysis, the administration will submit yet again to Congress a request for another aid package to respond to these longer-term problems."

He called the island's plight "first and foremost a humanitarian disaster" and praised the "compassionate, resilient spirit" of its people.

Ryan said he was struck by the “widespread devastation” in the interior towns and accounts of mayors of communities where lost bridges have left them cut off from the rest of the island. He added that there is a need for longer-term needs to be addressed after the humanitarian crisis passes.

“We are all in this with each other for the long haul to make sure that this island survives that this is a beautiful place to raise a family,” he said.

"This is our own country and these are our fellow citizens. They need our help and they are going to get our help," Ryan pledged.
Meanwhile, the so-called President:
Trump: We cannot aid Puerto Rico 'forever'

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that Puerto Rico is going to have to shoulder more responsibility for recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria, saying the federal government's emergency responders can't stay there "forever."

His comments -- in which he also blamed the beleaguered island for a financial crisis "largely of their own making" and infrastructure that was a "disaster" before the hurricane -- come as Puerto Rico still reels from a lack of electricity, public health access and a rising death toll. The remarks quickly prompted cries from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that Puerto Rico still needs a lot of help, as well as the mayor of San Juan, who said they were "unbecoming" and appeared to come from a "hater in chief."

Meanwhile, Texas and Florida -- two states Trump won during last year's presidential election -- also were struck by severe hurricanes recently, but the President has made no public indication that the federal government is pulling back on its response there.

Trump is a promoter which means he's a marketer. That's also why he beat Clinton. Marketing is about getting attention. Understand that and you may start to understand Trump. The non-stop attention from the media is why he won the presidency. He's the quintessential RONCO president and the energizer bunny combined. But wait! There's more!
