Tom Petty . . . gone

Post by ex-khobar Andy »

I went to a Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan concert (Rich Stadium, Buffalo) in 1985-ish -- I had never heard of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers but his set in support of the headliners impressed me the most. I remember most a young woman next to us who borrowed my binoculars (she had come to see Petty) and almost throttled me in the process.

This is very shocking and sad news. Tom Petty is one of my favorite artists. He and his band were one of the best bands I've ever seen in concert. RIP Tom...

but what goes up must come down
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings,
coming down is the hardest thing

Tom Petty was one of those artists I never counted as one of my favorites - except that so many of his lyrics I heard in my youth are engraved on my heart forever.

RIP

CBS Erroneously Reports Tom Petty’s Death, Setting Off an Outpouring

The news ricocheted around the web immediately: CBS News was reporting that Tom Petty was dead.

It kicked off widespread reaction and remembrances on Monday, with star singers like John Mayer, Shania Twain and Jon Bon Jovi all paying tribute to Mr. Petty on Twitter.

It soon emerged, however, that the news was premature.

When CBS reported Mr. Petty’s death on Twitter, preceded by a capitalized banner “JUST IN,” the network attributed the news to the Los Angeles Police Department. In an article published online, there was no mention of the L.A.P.D., merely the phrase “CBS News has confirmed.” (CBS later deleted the tweet.)

Tom Petty . . . gone...

... not yet...

Petty was taken off life support with DNR instructions. Most likely he'll not make it until sunup.

He said in a recent interview that after the 40th Anniversary tour he wanted to stay home and enjoy his grandchild; the tour just finished last week.

There's a lesson in that about how much time we have left to do what we really want to do; 66 is young, but when your time comes...

Exactly why we're taking the risks of retiring early (me 58, Hen 54.)

We got together later in life, and want to spend as much of the time we have left together.

Econo & Andy, early morning posting doesn't always give rise to humor, but I get it now. Ha!

Thanks Econo - I was beginning to wonder if anyone would. Maybe helps to be a longtime Bloom County fan.
