Sad tale, but nicely written Ray...

Very sad and truly heartbreaking. That song/video is intense.

Just listened to the new cd from Stephen Stills and Judy Collins (I think Judy should have gotten first billing) called -Everybody Knows- It is getting lots of publicity so you don't need me to tell you about it, but. . .

The title track is an old Leonard Cohen song that seems to me to be exactly right for our times now. Here is a link to the original.

I caught this on the radio the other day and it is immediately going on my list of all-time favorite works. It is enormously entertaining, intensely lyrical and really has something for everyone -- even those who "hate modern music." (It really owes more to Mahler than to the musical mathematicians.) Plus, Hillary Hahn is just a stellar violinist and the piece was written specially for her. So let me present to you Jennifer Higdon's Concerto for Violin:

If you're looking for something more "hummable," lately I have been listening non-stop to recordings of Max Bruch's Romance for Viola, and especially this particular rendition, which is very warmly and beautifully played:

I am also very fond of this stunning arrangement for string quartet backing the soloist, every bit as powerful as the fully orchestrated version:

Thanks, SueU. It's great background music while I'm doing other online stuff.

If anyone here appreciates good bass playing and is interested in hearing how good John Entwistle actually was, here's a good example. His playing for 'Won't Get Fooled Again' is isolated for your listening pleasure. You should Fast Forward because nothing starts until about 1:40.

Like, WOW! man. Brilliant.

Entwistle, the Jimi Hendrix of the bass guitar. And all done the old fashion way -- with stage monitor system speakers, no yet-to-be-invented earphones.

Another senseless OD. RIP, John.

Since gifting you all with her performance of the Higdon Violin Concerto a couple of months ago, I have been giving considerable attention to the numerous concert videos of Hilary Hahn, and I have come to the conclusion that she is the greatest violinist of our time and probably the last 100 years. Her technical precision is jaw-dropping; she brings incredible power and intensity to large-scale concertos and subtle skill to unaccompanied works. She ranges easily from Baroque to modern compositions. Here, listen to these: the Brahms Violin Concerto, the Sarabande from Bach's Violin Partita No. 2, and the Prokofiev Violin Concerto (no.1). Like me, you will be dead from the awesomeness of Hilary Hahn, as she is killing it all over the place. I think her rendition of the Brahms is probably better than Heifetz's, which was always the gold standard for me, and her Scherzo in the Prokofiev -- about 9 minutes in -- is absolutely breathtaking.) I got tickets to see her do the Prokofiev concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra in April, and I can't wait. (I missed her performance with the orchestra in December -- she did Bernstein's Serenade -- but fortunately for me, she comes to Philly pretty often, since she went to school here and still has many local connections.) If she ever comes to your town, stop whatever it is you are doing and go see her; this kind of talent is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

Back on the pop music front, if you haven't heard this bit of confection from Toronto's Alvvays by now, you should get out from under your rock:

Also, the new single from Car Seat Headrest is pretty good:

Apparently, they don't play this enough in Eugene or Ann Arbor to make it to adult ears, but I appreciate you keeping us from falling too hopelessly behind. :)

What else is it? (The song won; not the entire album)

I'm sorry, but I really must object to a discussion about Leonard Cohen taking place in a forum room called "Music recommendations"...

Any discussion about Lennie as a "musician" really belongs in "Laffs"...
