Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make first appearance after engagement

London (CNN)Britain's Prince Harry and the American actor Meghan Markle have made their first public appearance since their engagement was announced earlier Monday.

The couple appeared at a photocall in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace in London on Monday afternoon, where Harry told reporters he knew Markle was "the one" from "the very first time we met."

The Prince declined to elaborate on his proposal to Markle, but when asked whether it was romantic, he smiled and said, "of course it was."

The pair, who became engaged quietly earlier this month, will marry in spring 2018 and live at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, where Harry currently resides.

If HM the Queen wasn't happy, the marriage would not be happening. The Succession to the Crown Act requires her permission for any of the the first six in the line of succession to marry.

aren't many things that are reinvigorated by a young couple marrying, but then, such are the ways of monarchies based on royal blood. It makes me wish we had a king here, and the Kardashians could reinvigorate it.

aren't many things that are reinvigorated by a young couple marrying,

I'm not just referring to this marriage...(which is really kind of a side show...)

I'm referring primarily to the whole comportment of William and Kate, and the way they're modernizing the approach to the Monarchy, without destroying its dignity...

That's not an easy line to navigate, but they seem to be doing it well...

(If Her Majesty had passed from the scene a decade ago and left Charles In Charge, I suspect the Monarchy would be on its way out...)

well not understanding the point of a hereditary monarchy (except as something for tourists to ogle and the cutting of ribbons at supermarkets), I.m not all that sure it would be a bad thing, but I'll leave it to some of our British members and others to defend the purpose of it.

I found it interesting that I was in a doctor's waiting room this morning with around 12 people there. The TV was on CNN and no-one was paying much attention while they described the CFPB debacle. But the Prince Harry Meghan Markle item came on, and every face in that waiting room turned to the telly.

It is interesting how the general Brit upper crust will take this mongrelization of proud royalty. Will their children be noble? For AKC pure-bred dogs, you can 'out-cross' (breed with something not within the particular pedigree) Like a Golden retriever with a English setter, to improve some characteristic, and in three generations after one out-cross, the result can be registered and called a pure-bred again.

What will the royal keepers of the pedigree do with her parents? I think the US constitution has prohibitions against foreign letters of nobility or title

All very silly, in my mind. I prefer hybrid vigor.

Such a shitty stupid old rumor, and so hateful to poor Harry. It’s pretty clear he’s Spencer ginger and also has a VERY strong resemblance to his father, the Prince of Wales - those noses are basically identical.
