One Oscar nomination for screenplay. At 2hrs 14 mins, I think it's at least 14 mins too long (and I've watched it 3-4 times because I like it).
S. Yeah. Um, Mack must have had some reason to think this would work. I guess you've known him a while, huh?

J. I don't know him at all.

S. Really? Well. I don't know him much, either. Hmm, that's funny. Maybe we're the only two black people he ever met.

Hint: one of the above is a genuine quote from the movie that LJ is going to name

The other quote is from this one....

And there's a wide, gaping, canyon of difference between those two films...

That was a great movie and looking at the poster makes me feel very acutely the passage of time.

Mary-Louise Parker's little overbite....

Correct, LJ - of course.

Okay, I've been burned before saying "this is a movie I'm sure everyone here has seen", so I'm not going to say that...

I'll just say that this is a movie that everyone here should have seen, and shame on you if you haven't... 8-)

This flick was made in the 50s and the star and the director are very, very well known (this is my favorite movie for both.) Most of the supporting cast is also well known.

That would be a no, BB...

But it's a good guess in that it meets the criteria laid out by the clues... (right time frame, well known director, well known lead and supporting cast...)

I googled it.

I must say this is perhaps one of the greatest movies ever made.

I have it in my vast collection.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Since it seems to be about advertising, maybe it's this one —

Advertising movies of the 50s? Considering I've seen maybe 2 or 3 movies from the 50s (and could not actually name them without help) I guess it's pot-shot time:

Not bad guesses based on the available clues, but both wrong...

The lead character is an advertising executive, but that's really only incidental to the movie; it's not a film about the advertising business...(It's a mystery/suspense flick with a lot of wry humor.)

A couple of more quotes:
A: Something wrong with your eyes?

B: Yes, they're sensitive to questions.
A: What possessed you to come blundering in here like this? Could it be an overpowering interest in art?

B: Yes, the art of survival.
The film's status as an all time classic was not immediately recognized. It won no Academy Awards, and was only nominated for three; none in the major categories. (It was competing in the year that Ben Hur cleaned up with 11 Oscars, though I doubt there are many people today who would argue that Ben Hur is a better or more important film than this one.)

Hmm, was guessing at the wrong end of the decade if it was around the time of Ben Hur.

Vertigo

Certainly meets the criteria of a well known director and star.

You're getting very close, Datsun...

But Jimmy Stewart's character in Vertigo was a retired detective, not an ad executive...
