For All My Fellow Women's Ice Hockey Fans Here...

Post by Lord Jim »

(And from a previous discussion, I know there are a lot of you.. ;) )

After the first period, it's Switzerland 3, Korea 0...

You can catch all the action right now live on USA :ok

This is a combined South Korean and North Korean team, so hopefully The Dear Leader won't try to fire a missile at Bern...

Oh dear...

6-0 after two periods; and the Koreans have only managed four Shots-On-Goal versus 29 for the Swiss Miss team...

(In fairness, the Koreans are working with a big disadvantage since they're fielding a team with players a number of whom never even practiced together until a few days ago...)

WOMEN'S ice hockey??  That's something new this year, right?

Same with 'Mixed Doubles Curling' ... and then there are all those recently added events catering to the GenX crowd such as the snowboard and freestyle skiing events.

Makes me wonder what events have been discarded (besides compulsory – a/k/a 'school' – figures in skating; or dog sled racing, which was a demonstration sport at Lake Placid in 1932) to make room for these newcomers.  Or are even the Olympics susceptible to creeping expansion and bloat in search of relevance (and ratings)?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Final score, 8-0... :?
WOMEN'S ice hockey?? That's something new this year, right?
Actually, 20 years:
The U.S. Women's Olympic Team has participated in every Winter Olympic Games since the first-ever women's ice hockey tournament in 1998. USA took home Gold at that tournament in Nagano, Japan in a gold-medal game thriller over the Canadians. Since 1998, the U.S. has won three silver medals (2002, 2010, 2014) and one bronze medal (2006).

Team USA will be competing in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games from Feb. 11-22, 2018 with 11 other countries.

Team USA is competing in Group A alongside Canada, Finland and Russia, [Yet another example of how the world stacks the deck against us. Unfair!]and will open the competition Sunday, February 11 against Finland.

Hey, don't you be knocking curling, or we're gonna have a problem, you and me. :fu

I saw an interview clip with the Korean team’s coach - an American - just the other day; she was commenting on the difficulty of communication during practices due to the 2 distinctly different Korean dialects plus her English.

Nice try, anyway!

Here's a link to the full TV schedule for the Winter Olympics:

If you're like me, and had absolutely no idea that NBC now has as Sports Network, here's a link to show you where to find it in your area (cable and satellite):

http://www.nbcsports.com/tv-listings

So Ray, you can now arrange your schedule to not miss one minute of all the the breath-taking curling action... :ok

Very exciting final period in the US women's hockey team opener against Finland...

US wins 3-1 (it was 2-1 until the last 13 seconds, so Finland had a really good chance to tie right up till the end...For most of the game the US dominated on offense but the Finnish goalie did a phenomenal job blocking shots to keep it close...The final goal was scored on an open net, as Finland went to six attackers to try to tie the score)

And the Canucks cruised to victory in their opener against the Russkies, 5-0...

Yes, the Finns pulled their goalie.

As a Buffalo resident for 20+ years I grew fond of the Sabres and went to a few games and grew reasonably familiar with tactics and how to speak the language. As a kid I lived in Montreal and I can still name most of the Canadiens who won the Stanley Cup five years in a row. What I did not know, until Trailer Park Boys (and if you have never watched that, you won't understand any of the following) and Bubbles, Julian and Ricky went to JRoc's house and found him pulling his goalie, is that the expression has a somewhat different meaning to some people. Know what I'm saying'? (I can't do it.)

Hot Six Seconds...

Post by Burning Petard »

I don't watch hockey (any gender) on tv much. My brain and eyes can't even find the puck most of the time. This is a very fast game. But that game of USA vs that other team with no flag ! ! ! TWO goals off the same stick in SIX SECONDS!?!?!?!

Grace and Athleticism and Supreme Skill in a women's sport without the usual T&A. Very nice indeed.

I'm still trying to get my head around "my fellow women's" and why the bunch of you have ice hockey fans. All this time I thought you were a dude. :shrug

Okay now, nobody likes a gloating Canadian... :P

Credit where credit is due, the Canadian goalie Genevieve Lacasse really did a fantastic job, blocking 44 shots-on-goal (The USA squad out shot the Great White Northers 45-24)
Big RR wrote:I imagine there may well be a next time in the finals.
I think there's a very good chance of that...

At least from what I've seen these are the two best teams in the competition...
