Who Knew?

Post by RayThom »

Billy Graham, America's pastor, has died
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nat ... 858017001/

I honestly thought Graham died years ago, and his son then took over the business.

I pass on my thoughts and prayers.

Strange that my first reaction was also "didn't he die years ago?"

My next reaction was , "my mother taught me never to speak ill of the dead, so I won't say anything."

I knew he was still around, but ailing...

His pastor son (Franklin Graham) gets interviewed on the cable news channels fairly often, and usually the interviewer starts by asking how the old man is doing...

De mortuis nil nisi bonum and all that. But I'd willingly make an exception in his case. This is the asshole (there is a lot of it about these days) who agreed with Nixon about the (a) danger of a Catholic (JFK) becoming President and (b) the 'stranglehold' the Jews held on the media and the economy ("They don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country.").

I thought he had died a long time ago as well. When I was younger, he used to annoy me (as did some of his compatriots like Rex Humbard (of the Cathedral of Tomorrow) and Oral Roberts (HEAL!!!!!), but now with all the horrible televangelists and their open preaching of hatred, he doesn't quite seem as bad. Kind of like comparing Norman Vincent Peale with Sun Myung Moon.

I've never really paid attention to the son.

No, he's just asleep.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Wrath is such a harsh term. The priests and nuns in EL-HI used to warn me of God's wrath, too. Is that "sexually immoral" by biblical standards (whose bible version?), or by contemporary standards? Married, unmarried? Gay, straight? Believer, non-believer? Who exactly is the true, and final, arbitrator of our immorality?

Now that ol' Billy has supposedly met God face-to-face in heaven (if that's where he went) I hope he has seen the error of his ways.

Personally, with this kind of bluster as a guideline, I'm convinced we're all going to hell... except for Jehovah's Witnesses, of course.

And now the old bigot will 'Lie in Honor' at the Capitol. 'Lie in State' is reserved for Presidents, military guys (e.g., Pershing, MacArthur) and members of Congress (but J Edgar Hoover got in there somehow - I suspect that his secret files reached beyond the grave); the 'Honor' designation is for those less deserving. Since it was created it has been given to two police officers shot while defending the Capitol and to Rosa Parks. Hands up all those who think Billy Graham is up there with Rosa Parks.

I checked and it looks like Pierre L'Enfant (the architect of the street plan of DC) was disinterred to lie in state at the capitol, and it does not mention anything about military of government service.

As for Graham and Parks, the point is that it's all political (just as it was with J Edgar), and right now the leaning is toward Graham, and against more civil rights activists. Put his body where you want, I won't file past it or visit his grave.

Unless they throw it in the local garbage dump. (Then I might do it inadvertently.)

He'll be the second biggest name lying in the Capitol since January 29th.

Who Knew?

A Televangelist and the Pope died at the same time, both went to heaven. They were met at the Pearly Gate by St. Peter who conducted them to their rooms. The Pope's room was spartan with bare floor, army cot for a bed, and a single bulb for light.

They came to the Televangelist's room. It was huge with wall to wall carpeting, king sized water bed, indirect lighting, color TV, stereo, Jacuzzi and fully stocked bar. The Televangelist said, "There must be a mistake. This must be the Pope's room!"

St Peter said, "There's no mistake. This is your room. We have lots of Pope's, but you're our very first Televangelist!"

I don't know who are lining up to see Rev. Graham's body now, or why.

But if POTUS dies while in office I will surely make the pilgrimage to DC and willingly stand in line for hours and hours--to see for myself that he is dead. To pay my respects, I will look around for a container and throw in a penny.

Is Bully Graham the reason I am seeing so many flags at half-staff? Really?
