Jailed drug suspect goes 40 days without pooping

A British man jailed on suspicion of swallowing drugs has not had a bowel movement in 40 days, thwarting police efforts to recover the evidence.

A suspected British drug dealer has gone more than five weeks in jail without moving his bowels in a determined toilet strike.

Essex police have detained Lamarr Chambers, 24, since Jan. 17, when he was arrested on drug charges in Harlow, Essex. Chambers is believed to have swallowed some of the drugs police say he possessed before his arrest.

Essex Live reported that Chambers' lawyer said his client would rather die than poop.

Andrew Horsall asked Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Friday to release Chambers as his "life is at risk" and he doesn't want to be resuscitated if he collapses.

But prosecutors say no poo, no release.

"It is quite a clear-cut application," prosecutor Bob Rowlingson told the court. "Mr. Chambers has been refusing treatment, it is clear he is preventing the passing of evidence of the drugs he swallowed prior to his arrest."

While Chambers initially refused food, eventually he began accepting cereal bars, eating up to eight a day, according to Essex Live. He has since switched to fruits and vegetables, but also ate some fish prepared by his mother prior to his court date.

Chambers has been drinking water, but he refused laxatives.

Long-term fecal retention can result in a stool impaction that requires intervention in the form of enemas, endoscopy or even surgery. Extreme constipation can lead to fatal cardiac arrest.

They've called in a forensic fecal matter expert, Noshite Sherlock, to investigate. He has vowed to get to the bottom of the problem.

That is interesting; I wonder how long they can hold him on suspicion (and if he can hold it longer). Of course, I would imagine the condoms or whatever the drugs are in would eventually be partially digested and rupture.

My guess it that it depends how long they can hold him without having the drugs; he's clearly flirting with danger, but if they have to release him next week, say, he could possibly be OK (Of course he'd have to find a place where he could defecate without the drugs being seized by the police, but that would depend on UK law and what kind of warrant would/could issue).
