Today's Election in PA's 18th...

Post by Lord Jim »

Trump carried this district by 19 points, but now the Dem is favored:
Poll: Democrat Lamb leads in Pa. special election

Even a lower-turnout model has Republican Rick Saccone trailing.

PITTSBURGH — Democrat Conor Lamb heads into the final day of the special congressional election in western Pennsylvania with the lead, according to a new public poll released Monday.

Monmouth University used three different turnout models ahead of Tuesday’s special election —and Lamb has the advantage in all three of them.[A number of other recent polls also have Lamb in the lead]

Lamb is squaring off against Republican Rick Saccone, a state legislator and Air Force veteran in a traditionally blue-collar district that backed President Donald Trump by 20 points in 2016. They’re competing to replace GOP Rep. Tim Murphy, who resigned in October.

Lamb leads Saccone, 51 percent to 45 percent, the poll shows — using a turnout model that mirrors a Democratic surge that’s appeared in other special elections throughout the last year. Three percent of likely voters are undecided, and 1 percent would support another candidate.

A Monmouth poll released in mid-February, using the same model, found Saccone with a slight edge, 49 percent to 46 percent.

The poll suggests Lamb can win even if that Democratic surge falls short, however. In a more restrictive turnout model — designed to mirror a lower-turnout electorate that typically votes in midterm elections — Lamb has a slim, 2-point lead, 49 percent to 47 percent. A higher-turnout scenario, more similar to a presidential election, produces a 7-point Lamb lead, 51 percent to 44 percent.

“When added to a potential Democratic surge that has been building for weeks, Lamb appears to have picked off enough Republican-leaning voters to take a lead going into this contest’s final weekend,” said Monmouth University pollster Patrick Murray. “It would mark an extraordinary swing from Trump’s nearly 20-point victory here in 2016 if he could hold on to win.”
Lamb is a perfect template for the type of district-appropriate candidate the Dems need to field to take back the House...

If the Democrats pick up this seat, than the Congressional GOP should be afraid...

very afraid....

There are nearly 100 seats currently held by Republicans that Trump carried by less of a margin than in PA-18...

Yeah, but the funny part is that by May, PA-18 will be an entirely different district, because the PA Supreme Court has declared the Commonwealth's congressional districts to be unconstitutionally gerrymandered and have drawn a new map. When the dust settles, it is entirely possible that neither Lamb nor Saccone will even still be in the 18th.

Election forecaster moves 26 races in favor of Dems

A top election forecaster has moved more than two dozen House races in favor of Democrats.

Sabato’s Crystal Ball, an election handicapper at the University of Virginia, announced the ratings changes Thursday morning.

This is the first time in this election cycle that fewer than 218 seats have been at least rated as leaning Republican. All Democratic incumbents' races are now rated at least “likely Democratic.”

The ratings also name Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) for the first time. Ryan’s seat was moved from “safe” to “likely Republican." The group noted that reports that he may not run for reelection were the primary reason the move.

The forecaster moved five seats defended by GOP incumbents from “leans Republican” to “toss-up,” and one open New Hampshire seat from “toss-up” to “leans Democratic.”

One of the most significant ratings changes is the special election for Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District, which is now rated as a “toss-up.” A recent poll showed Democrat Conor Lamb holding a slim lead against state Rep. Rick Saccone (R) in the race for the deep-red district, which Trump won by double digits in the 2016 election.

The University of Virginia forecasters wrote that they think the odds of Democrats flipping the House in the midterm elections “are only about 50-50,” but said that those odds are “generous” to the GOP.

Yeah, this is the kind of thing you hear from a candidate who's confident of victory on election eve:
PA GOP Candidate Rick Saccone: My Opponents Hate God, Trump, and U.S.

Rick Saccone, the Republican congressional candidate endorsed by President Trump in Pennsylvania’s special election, told a crowd of supporters Monday night that his opponents hate the president, the country, and God.

“They’re energized for hate for our president,” Saccone said at a rally on the eve of Tuesday’s special election for the state’s 18th congressional district.

“Many of them have a hatred for our country. I’ll you some more—my wife and I saw it again today—they have a hatred for God,” he was quoted as saying by NBC News.

The remarks, which appear to be his closing argument in the race, came after a new Monmouth poll showed him behind his Democratic rival, Conor Lamb, whom Trump mocked as “Lamb the Sham” while stumping for Saccone over the weekend.

Donald Trump Jr., who was on hand Monday night to campaign with Saccone, told the audience Saccone would help his father’s agenda. “We need guys like Rick Saccone to be in there fighting with my father,” he said.

Hatred for God, Country and Trump...

Can you tell which thing is not like the others

Did you guess which thing was not like the others?

How fucking stupid is that guy?! Isn't Lamb a former Marine and former prosecutor (Assistant US Attorney, even)?

Not exactly a God and country hater!

About an 1100 vote margin for Lamb, with 95% of the precincts reporting...

There are an estimated 3700 absentee ballots in Allegheny County, (Lamb's strongest area) that probably wont be reported till around midnight Eastern Time...

What a thrilling election! Watching Steve Kornacki on MSNBC analyzing the outstanding vote - election night and absentee - and it’s finger-nibbling, edge-of-the-seat exciting!

95 vote lead. It seems likely that the Alleghany County absentee ballots will break for Lamb, but still...

The Allegheny County absentee vote is in, and Lamb is now up by 847...

There are another 3200 absentee votes to be counted...

Rick Santorum (who should know something about this and certainly has no reason to favor Lamb) is saying on CNN that Saccone would need 63% of the remaining absentee vote which he doesn't see happening, even though they're in areas Saccone's been carrying...

It looks like Lamb will pull it out by a few hundred votes...

What’s the # that triggers an automatic recount?

Of course Trump and his spokes-minions will spin a Lamb victory this narrow as, "Our candidate was losing badly until Donald The Great rode into town and nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat"...

And this just in...

Washington County is going to go ahead and count their absentee ballots tonight...
BoSoxGal wrote:What’s the # that triggers an automatic recount?
According to the reporting on CNN, there is no automatic recount provision for a congressional election in PA...

But it would probably be logical to assume that if the margin is within 200 votes or less, whoever is behind would go ahead and request a recount...

ETA:

The 1800 absentee votes in Westmoreland County will also be counted tonight, so that will cover all of the absentee ballots...

Today's Election in PA's 18th...

Post by RayThom »

Six minutes ago:

Conor Lamb leads by 0.4 percentage points, or 847 votes, over Rick Saccone with 99 percent of precincts fully reporting.

Candidate Party Votes Pct.
Conor Lamb Democrat 111,875 49.9%
Rick Saccone Republican 111,028 49.5%
Drew Miller Libertarian 1,351 0.6%

224,254 votes, 99% reporting (591 of 593 precincts)

And then there's this:

11:39 P.M. - 99 percent of precincts reporting

With 99 percent of precincts in the district reporting, the two candidates are running neck and neck. Fewer than 850 votes separate the two of them.
