Growing up in the 1950's and 60's commercial flight was luxurious and the stewardesses were glamorous and attentive. The meals were served on china and the cuisine was first rate. Passengers were well-groomed and dressed for the occasion.

Not so much anymore.

Now we have flight attendants who are more like correctional officers in prison, the food (if there is any) is on a par with the same kind of crap that was served to me in jail and fellow passengers inmates remind me of the inmates at Elmwood Correctional Facility. Rude and stupid.

Sad but true.

I remember that the first time my parents took us all to Italy, in 1970, an adult coach ticket from Toronto to Rome cost $500 Cdn. That would be about $3,250 today. I could get a business class ticket for about that price, while a coach ticket could be had for $1,200 without even waiting for a seat sale. So if I had to choose between eating on china and being able to fly three times for the price of one, I'd choose the latter any time.

I don't know what the price was, but six times in the 1957 to 1961 era we crossed the Atlantic by sea in the old Cunarders. For a 7 to 11 year old it was absoutely glorious. The crew didn't try to stop the kids going anywhere they wanted, and I spent much of my time on the bridge and even got to drive (RMS Queen Mary, IIRC - now at Long Beach CA) a time or two.

Went to and from Europe via the sea back in the mid '60's.

The Empress of Canada from Montreal to Liverpool and the Il de France from La Havre to NYC.

A time long past.
