And Yet Another School Shooting
And Yet Another School Shooting
CNN reports a shooting this morning at Great Mills High School in Maryland; the school is currently on lockdown and there aren't a lot of details yet. Hopefully everything is under control, but we will have to wait and see.

Oh pshaw, only a couple of deaths - it’s barely worth a thought or prayer.

CNN reporting that he young woman wounded is to be taken off life support.
Re: And Yet Another School Shooting
A good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun. If this should happen and be reported for few more time we would see a reduction in school shooting. If the media, would just stop reporting the names of the shooters that would help too, but they don’t want that.
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

So you really think the threat of being killed will deter the crazies that shoot up schools? I sincerely doubt that it would.

In this case, the shooter apparently got exactly what he wanted: his ex-girlfriend is dead, and he's dead. That'll teach him a lesson!

Big you missed it, but it is not just you or liberals in general but most people of all persuasions lack analytical ability. However, I think your ability is better than most. But, back to the crazy; these people are not motivated life or death, but by success and failure. Crazies that don’t score a large body count are failures. They don’t mind dying as long as they can win their fame.Big RR wrote:So you really think the threat of being killed will deter the crazies that shoot up schools? I sincerely doubt that it would.

It's almost as if Pastis, himself, wrote that tweet. And I'm sure that was the point.

Deny the crazy’s their fame and you would take away their motivation to shoot up schools. SO, STOP REPORTING THEIR NAMES.

Re: And Yet Another School Shooting
The practice of withholding the killer's name wouldn't stop anyone from going forward with a mass shooting. If it were as simple as something like "fame" being these killers' motivation, an argument could be made that not naming them could add the motivation to shoot the largest number of people possible in order to make the public more interested in knowing more about who did it.liberty wrote:Deny the crazy’s their fame and you would take away their motivation to shoot up schools. Of course that argument is as weak as the fame argument.

The noise startled Alexis Bukrym. It was a crashing sound, near the front of her apartment, and a few seconds later, another noise twisted her stomach and rattled her nerves: the sound of her bedroom doorknob jiggling, then turning, and the door swinging open with a creak.liberty wrote:A good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun. If this should happen and be reported for few more time we would see a reduction in school shooting. There’d been a series of car break-ins at the Ocala, Florida, apartment complex, and Bukrym and her neighbors worried that burglaries would come next. “Everybody in our community was on edge,” she said. “There’s a lot of bad people in the whole world, and a lot of people think, ‘It’ll never be me.’ But I’m cautious.”
Standing in the middle of her room on that Friday evening in April 2017, the lights on and the cloudy sky darkening out the window, Bukrym moved quickly, instinctively. A slightly built 23-year-old living away from her parents’ house for the first time, she’d prepared herself for the possibility of danger. As the door opened, she reached under her pillow for her handgun, a Ruger LCP .380, pointed it at the figure filling her doorframe, and pulled the trigger.
The bullet struck the man in the chest, and as he collapsed, Bukrym got a look at his face for the first time. It was her roommate, Anthony Schwartz. Bukrym dropped the gun and fell back against the wall in shock.
“You remember every second of it,” Bukrym said in an interview. “The face he made. How he fell. We were best friends.”
Since 2015, at least 47 people have shot friends, loved ones, roommates, or emergency responders they said they’d mistaken for home intruders, killing 15, according to an analysis of US gun violence incidents by BuzzFeed News and the Trace (Mr. Schwartz was one of the lucky ones and did survive). In at least 27 of those cases, criminal charges were dismissed or never filed because authorities deemed the shootings accidental, an act of self-defense in a moment of panic.
Seems like "good guys with guns" can sometimes just ADD to the problem....

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: And Yet Another School Shooting
That's absolutely the case; even people with a lot of training can and do make mistakes and shoot innocent people in the heat of the moment; add an untrained person who may never even have fired a gun before at a target, let alone a human being, and the chances of adding to the problem are greatly increased.
Like the case of teachers, people who were criticized by many as not being competent enough to teach their kids (or called glorified baby sitters, etc.) are now being exemplified as people by many of those same people as individuals who should be entrusted with guns in schools to protect those kids they were too incompetent to teach.

Re: And Yet Another School Shooting
The trouble with anecdotal evidence is that it works both ways; and it is indeed true that a good guy with a gun stopped the Maryland shooter last week. (Take that at face value: it is possible (probable?) that since he had already shot his ex-girlfriend, who is the presumed target of his rampage, he had already done what he set out to do.) In the Gabby Giffords shooting, there were at least three people in the crowd with guns who did not take them out on the not unreasonable grounds that they did not want to be identified as the shooter when the police arrived.

Re: And Yet Another School Shooting
It now appears that the shooter killed himself. Either way, it's anecdotal, and I accept that in that instance, the armed deputy 's presence and actions may have prevented further loss of life or injury. That does not change the basic fact - that the easy access to weapons, assisted by the NRA, is 1 2 and 3 in the list of causes of school killings.ex-khobar Andy wrote:The trouble with anecdotal evidence is that it works both ways; and it is indeed true that a good guy with a gun stopped the Maryland shooter last week.
Re: And Yet Another School Shooting
We need research on gun violence in order to make important distinctions about the reasons for different kinds and how to intervene and prevent.
The shooting in Maryland was a domestic violence incident, involving a former partner executing his former partner, as occurs far too frequently all over America, all the time. It wasn’t in the same vein as mass shootings, it wasn’t even a mass shooting.

Why is it that you guys don’t like the militia idea? If only the civilian militia had guns the misuse of guns would greatly decrease. I use the term civilian militia just to be clear even though it is redundant. Are you afraid that black gang members will be denied the right to own guns?Big RR wrote:That's absolutely the case; even people with a lot of training can and do make mistakes and shoot innocent people in the heat of the moment; add an untrained person who may never even have fired a gun before at a target, let alone a human being, and the chances of adding to the problem are greatly increased.
