This poor little bird (When I was at school there were two sorts of birds - big birds and little birds. This is definitely a little one.) has been trying to build a nest for three or four days. We have columns at the front of the house that hold the roof up (think Tara but less grand) and there is a platform maybe 12" x 6" at the top. Sheltered and the squirrels can't get up there, so if it's location location location I think he has made a good choice. I assume he's a he - IIRC the blokes do all the building but I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.

So he has been flying up there for days carrying pieces of grass and twigs and trying to assemble them into some sort of nest. He's a bit clumsy, so often while he is trying to insert one blade of grass into his construction four other pieces fall off the platform to the ground. Also it's a featureless flat platform so there is nothing to anchor anything to. I am afraid he is wasting his time and he is not going to satisfy his hormonal urges this spring. I am thinking of borrowing my neighbor's ladder and going up there with a couple of fist sized rocks so that there is something stable there for him to use as an anchor.
Any thoughts?
