So What Will The Diversion Be?

Post by Lord Jim »

Il Boobce is virtually certain to let loose with a major diversion (perhaps more than one) this weekend (most likely Sunday, but possibly earlier) in a desperate attempt to divert news media attention away from the Sunday evening Sixty Minutes Stormy Daniels interview broadcast...

I don't think he'll go with the biggest diversion bomb he could possibly drop...firing Bob Mueller...because he's still getting too much push back on that from the GOP leadership on The Hill...

Some other high profile names that could find themselves on the chopping block this weekend:

John Kelly, Jeff Sessions, Jim Matis, (that firing would be a major disaster for the country) Rod Rosenstein...(There have been rumors that the Sec. for Veterans Affairs is on the way out, but I doubt that Trump would see firing him as a big enough diversion)

If Trump doesn't want to go with a firing, some other possibilities would be announcing that the US is withdrawing from NAFTA, and/or the Iran nuke deal, additional tariffs, or a military strike of some sort...

Any speculation?

Another possibility...

Trump could veto the budget deal, (he's been pouting about not getting enough money for his mythical wall) that would trigger a government shutdown, and certainly pull a lot of media attention...

How about Trump announcing withdrawing US troops from Syria?

I doubt if it would be enough to divert much of the viewing audience from watching "60 Minutes," however, it would make his good buddy, Putin, very happy.

Oh, I had answered this in the other thread:

Well I don't know, but hiring Bolton looks like a pretty good diversion; that man made W look like a genius, so he could make Trump look only like a moron.

All good possibles...

But if you had money on "veto the budget deal", I'm afraid you can tear up your ticket:
Trump signs budget deal after raising government shutdown threat

In the latest episode of the Republican president throwing his White House, Congress and the federal government off balance, Trump had threatened in an early morning tweet to kill the government funding deal.

Initially, it had been a foregone conclusion that Trump would sign the ahead of a midnight deadline to keep the government running.

Trump used the threat to draw attention to his displeasure about immigration issues, although he said the bill would boost funding to the military, one of his top priorities.

"There are a lot of things I'm unhappy about in this bill," he told reporters, patting the more than 2,000 pages of the bill stacked on a purple box beside him in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House.

"I will never sign another bill like this again," he said. "Nobody read it. It's only hours old."

The tweeted veto threat had caught Trump's own aides by surprise, as well as lawmakers in the Republican-dominated Senate and House of Representatives, who had already left Washington for a scheduled two-week spring recess. Trump himself was scheduled on Friday to fly to Florida for a weekend at his private resort.

ETA:

Trump was able to get some diversion value cutting into the McDougal interview coverage this morning just by threatening the veto, but the timing of the funding bill wasn't going to make actually vetoing very useful to help with the Daniels interview...

If Trump hadn't signed the bill, the funding for the government would have run out at midnight tonight, and by Sunday morning the Congress would have been back to pass a temporary funding extension by a veto-proof margin, (since a shut down serves the political purposes of neither side) which would have re-opened the government and minimized the diversion value for the Daniels interview Sunday night...

He's going to need something else...

Oh come on Diversion Don, you already used this one...

Must try harder:
White House announces policy to ban most transgender people from serving in military

(CNN)The White House on Friday announced a policy to ban most transgender people from serving in the US military.

Following a Pentagon policy review after a tweet by President Donald Trump last year, the White House said the policy will say "transgender persons with a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria -- individuals who the policies state may require substantial medical treatment, including medications and surgery -- are disqualified from military service except under certain limited circumstances."

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Trump had rescinded his previous policy to allow this new policy to take its place.

Rachel Maddow's going with a Sunday afternoon pardon for Mike Flynn...

It wouldn't have much practical effect on the Russiagate investigation since Flynn's already been singing for months, but it would definitely pull a lot of media attention...

Trump's one and only tweet today is an expression of condolences to France for yesterday's Jihadist terrorist attack...

Gee, I can't remember the last Saturday that wasn't accompanied by a Trump tweet storm, randomly flailing out at multiple targets...

He must be saving it up for tomorrow...

Isn't the big tub-o'-goo on the links today? Maybe he'll start a tweet storm after the sun goes down.

Maybe he was tied up today with Melanie and the lawyers, hammering out her divorce settlement.

You can question the source but I sure find the idea of imminent divorce quite plausible.

Maybe, but do you really care? Trump was a jerk when he married her (and all his previous wives for that matter) and he's still a jerk, so what? If she divorces him it doesn't change my perception of him one bit.

I view it this way -- with Lord Dampnut's fragile ego and general ineptitude everything matters. I'm for anything that will help with his inevitable meltdown.

I concur with that, and if a divorce could do that, I do hope it happens. Otherwise, to me it's kind of like the golden showers video--so what? FWIW, it's kind of like saying he has a small penis--if it pisses him off, it has some utility. Of course if he lies about it to investigators or under oath, that is a big thing.

The upcoming diversion will be the firing and prosecution of senior FBI and DOJ staff. The ground work was laid with the IG's now fourteen month long investigation paralleled with the appointment of a prosecutor earlier. Lots of DC denizens are in deep shit.

There's a reason McCabe is out raising funds for a legal defense.

I'll use Lord Dampnut's eloquent standard dodge here, “We'll see, we'll see what happens. We'll know in a very short period of time. But it looks like it could be something that will be maybe not good. But when we see we'll know. Believe me."

There's been a lot of rumors that didn't tie to anything. Now that Huber has been identified, some of the rumors make sense. Comey and McCabe weren't dispatched for nothing. The question is how deep and how wide will it go? Huber is a prosecutor not associated with DC and an Obama pick. It's up to him to examine the evidence, file charges and prosecute if he decides to. Sessions gets an atta boy from me for not contributing to the media circus and delegating the job to Huber who has excellent credentials. Sessions is out of it.
