Gas Pains?

With regular going for about $3.70 per gallon here in Northern California (including the just passed 40-cent per gallon tax) it won't be too long before $4 gas is here.

I'm not complaining because I drive so little as to not really matter.

Just curious, what is a gallon of regular going for in your neck of the woods?

Just yesterday I saw that in PA (Kennett Square) it was $3.099, in NJ $2.869, and in DE $2.699.

I live in Kennett Sq. but shop in tax free DE at almost every opportunity. While I'm there I always fill up, or top off, at WAWA. I use their credit card and they credit me $0.05 per gallon.

Do you burn 93 octane? You must drive a high end luxury vehicle. Sweet!

I'm not sure, but I think SA uses leaded fuel (or recently phased it out (as much of Africa did) and uses an interim fuel with some non lead additive to boost the octane rating); my guess is that many of the cars there run on a higher octane, much as older US cars did. when I first started driving, I think regular fuel (leaded) had an octane rating of 95, premium over 100 (if I recall Sunoco 260 was well over 100).

$2.67 - $2.85 for regular around here. I fill up 1 & 1/2 times per month, typically - I drive to work every other weekend and in between not much. With beach and garden season starting I might burn some extra gallons, but it will depend on how high the prices go.

Octane rating? Is that what that is? 93 is the lowest and cheapest - just like my eight year old Hyundai Tucson with the non-operational air back (driver's side).

Thanks to Trump's Iran debacle, we expect a 70c hike in petrol prices real soon. The only good thing is that they are raised at one minute past midnight on the second Wednesday of the month. So everyone fills up on Tuesday

BTW — when my family took a vacation to Canada back in the mid-'60s, gas up there sold by the imperial gallon; i.e., five US quarts to the gallon. Is that still the case or have they gone metric and sell by the liter/litre?

Probably 93RON, which would be about 89 pump octane in the US.

Many non-Dluxury vehicles burn mid-grade or premium. (Offhand, a Dodge Intrepid.)

Yes - most of the world uses RON. US and Canada use the (RON + MON)/2 (mean of two types of measurement) number. (RON + MON)/2 is also known as the anti-knock index.

When I filled up my "new" truck the other day it was $3.62. At least this one seems to not ping on regular unleaded; as my older one (well, my '76) is pretty picky and needs midgrade. The downside is the '76 has an aftermarket oversize gas tank so I don't have to fill it as often. 3.3 gallons may not seem much, but the difference in range between an 11.7 gallon tank and a 15 gallon tank is quite noticeable. Makes the difference between 2 round trips or 3.

How high? I run 87 in my Caddy with 9:1 compression...I pull 2 degrees of timing out in hot weather. (Though I run a CRAPLOAD of vacuum advance for mileage.)

I'm kind of impressed with my Caprices...10.5 compression, iron heads, super-tall gearing, and 87 octane!
