Shocking And Sad...

Post by Lord Jim »

This guy had one of my dream jobs...

Traveling all over the world, meeting and partying with interesting people of every background and social strata, eating fantastic food, and getting paid to do it...

How is it possible to be so depressed that you would kill yourself with a gig like that? :shrug
CNN's Anthony Bourdain dead at 61

New York (CNN)Anthony Bourdain, the chef and gifted storyteller who took TV viewers around the world to explore culture, cuisine and the human condition for nearly two decades, has died. He was 61.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.

Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series, "Parts Unknown." His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller.

"His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

"Tony was an exceptional talent," CNN President Jeff Zucker said in an email to employees. "Tony will be greatly missed not only for his work but also for the passion with which he did it."

Fans, fellow chefs, celebrities and friends reacted with stunned sorrow.

"My heart breaks for Tony Bourdain," CNN's chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour wrote on Twitter. "May he rest in peace now.

"He was a friend, a collaborator, and family. A huge personality, a giant talent, a unique voice, and deeply, deeply human. My heart goes out to his daughter and family, and his longtime partners and friends at (production company) ZPZ."

Author and humorist John Hodgman recalled eating with Bourdain some 14 years ago.

"He was big even then, but he took time to sit with me in Chinatown to talk 'weird' food for a magazine piece I was writing. He taught me that our 'weird' is the world's delicious," Hodgman wrote on Twitter. "We ate chicken feet. The afternoon vibrated with life. RIP."

"I am shocked and deeply saddened," chef and "Queer Eye" star Antoni Porowski wrote on Twitter. "RIP to a father, partner, chef, writer, and incredibly talented man. ... Prayers for his loved ones."

Sometimes -- hell, maybe most of the time -- the demons win. The world is a poorer place today without Anthony Bourdain. His show was always enjoyable, even if it wasn't always great; he was the kind of person you could imagine you'd just love to spend an evening with.

Man, that is certainly true...

You can never truly know the depths of despair that even seemingly very happy people with an apparent great zest for life and everything to live for, (he also leaves behind a young daughter) can be struggling with...

Especially if, (as appears to be true in this case) they are successful at not letting it show through...

Obviously you can't tell much about what a person is really like just from seeing them on television, but every public reaction I've seen so far from people who were close to Bordain all seem to express shock at this...

I was thinking recently that he didn't look that well (physically); perhaps he's been sick and this factored into it?

But as Jim and sue said, you never know what demons someone is dealing with--often even those close to you.

I saw the online CNN obit this morning. To all of the above, I say me too.

Say thank you today to someone you have not connected with for a while.

I fucking loathe depression.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Shocking And Sad...

Much like Kate Spade, Bourdain had financial problems and was battling depression, never quite getting over his last divorce. Possibly drug and alcohol related.

As for suicide, the mental health professional who finally discovers quickly identifiable markers will be the next multi-millionaire. However, it will probably never happen -- way too many variables.

Being diagnosed with and even being treated for depression does not stop people from committing suicide. Sometimes it promotes it.

Heard a mental health professor (psychiatrist?) talking about school shootings. Near the end he said the 'root cause' was very complex, no silver bullet. Rather school shootings were part of a larger problem that included rising deaths from opioid addiction and suicides. All three part of a general rise of despair in our society.

Yes, the medications often lift the individual out of their lethargy to go ahead with their end of life plan.

Strange but true. :(

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Just now saw a 'tribute' to Mr. Bourdain by Keith Knight, posted in an online comics site

https://www.gocomics.com/thekchronicles/2018/06/13

It seems to say good things, but it starts in the upper left corner with "Anthony Bourdain was the shit" Is that now an idiom that carries positive appreciation?

Yes. Preceding it with the definite article ("was the shit") makes it a compliment. Using the indefinite article ("was a shit") would be an insult.
