Yeah, that's the word: TOXIC.

• You know, even with Presidents I despised, I found moments of humanizing charm.
  
  That's because it's actually hard to exist as a human being, even as a villain, without moments of humanizing charm.
  
  The brilliant film DOWNFALL, about the fall of Nazi Germany, dramatizes among other things how Hitler could be beloved by his secretary, an uncomplicated young woman to whom he was a kindly and avuncular figure, gently assuring her that she didn't need to be afraid around his dog. He has a gentle smile for her even as he and Eva say goodbye to the staff, before heading off to take poison. I believe that, and it doesn't make me soft on Nazism. It means I understand that even most monsters are human.
  
  Similarly, while I hated their Presidencies, I confess I adored the evident sincerity of Ronald Reagan's love for Nancy, and Dubya's occasional self-deprecating humor. Hell, I loved Dubya's exceeding love of clearing brush and adored that his staff was reduced to coming up with excuses for avoiding him, rather than be roped into this allegedly pleasurable activity. LOVED that. I myself saw Richard Nixon help a child who had fallen to the ground, and show genuine concern that the kid was okay. Even when they were villains on the same scale, that humanity existed.
  
  What I find astonishing about Trump is that there appear to be no such islands of recognizable humanity: no maturity, no sense that the world exists outside his own tangerine complexion, no level at which he will not be appalling for its own sake. He is toxic, down to his pores.
  
  He is the guy in any Stephen King story, about the bunch of people stuck in an enclosed place with a menacing supernatural manifestation, who is so nonstop unpleasant that even the most enthused King reader may say, "Ew, this guy's a bit much." Like that woman in THE MIST or the guy in THE LANGOLIERS, the ones so awful that you find yourself amazed that they somehow managed to survive until the story's page one, without someone walloping them in the face with a sack of cement. Even with villains, the human hunger for depth insists on there being something more. But, alas, such people exist. Toxic, to their pores.

"White nose" is common among swimming lifeguards and others who spend a great deal of time outdoors in the sun.  Comes from the way we used to cover our noses with white zinc oxide ointment (which had an SPF factor approaching infinity) to prevent sunburn — and, of course, the way the untanned/unburnt proboscis would stand out against the rest of the face when the ointment had been removed.
